NERSC Data Postdoctoral Fellow for High-Energy Physics -82724
Organization NE-NERSC
Berkeley Lab is Bringing Science Solutions to the World, and YOU
can be a part of it!
In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
(LBNL) is synonymous with "excellence." That's why we hire the best
- whether in research, science or operations. This is a great
opportunity to bring your top-notch skills to bear in support of
world-class scientific research that addresses national and global
challenges!
Position Summary:
The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)
is inviting applications for the position for a Postdoctoral Fellow
to conduct applied research and development in the area of
high-performance scientific computing (HPC) for experimental
High-Energy Physics (HEP). The position is part of a larger effort
to enable pathbreaking data-intensive science with NERSC's next
generation manycore supercomputer, the Cray KNL-based "Cori" system
and also part of a cross-lab HEP center of computing excellence
http://www.hepcce.org/.
NERSC is the leading provider of mission computing resources for
all projects funded by the U.S. DOE Office of Science, the Nation's
largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences. NERSC
is situated at Berkeley Lab, which is located in the hills above
the UC Berkeley campus, and conducts world-renowned research in
both computing sciences and physics.
You will enable critical computing for fundamental physics to be
conducted on one of the world’s largest supercomputers, and so will
gain experience of cutting edge computing hardware and systems, as
well as ‘Big Data’ technologies and tools, operating at extreme-scales.
Fellows will be part of a multidisciplinary team of computational
scientists and high-energy physicists, working to enable the use
of energy-efficient, high-performance computing systems by the
experimental high-energy physics community.
Specific Responsibilities:
Specific activities include the optimization of data transfer over
wide-area networks; I/O benchmarking and enhancements capitalizing
on NERSC’s recently acquired petabyte-sized NVRAM filesystem (the
‘Burst Buffer’); analysis and optimization of parallel applications
for HEP; scalable workflows and software deployment on HPC for HEP.
Disseminate results of research activities through refereed
publications and conference presentations and to ensure that new
methods are suitably documented for the wider HEP community, NERSC
staff, vendors, and other NERSC users.
May involve travel to sites at other labs and universities.
Experienced NERSC Big Data architects and LBL high-energy physicists
will mentor the appointee.
Participation in postdoctoral career and science enrichment activities
within the Berkeley Lab Computing Research and Physics Divisions
will also be encouraged.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in High-Energy Physics. Computational Science, Computer
Science, Applied Math or an equivalent/related field.
- Research experience and knowledge in computing and/or code development
ideally for HEP or HPC is required.
- Knowledge of, and interest in, high-energy physics is generally expected.
- Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills,
- Ability to work productively both independently and as part of an
interdisciplinary team balancing divergent objectives involving
research, code development, and optimization for next-generation
HPC hardware and storage systems.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Experience of many core and parallel computer architectures, threading
and vectorization
- Expertise in I/O and storage systems
- Familiarity with grid technologies for job submission and data transfer
- Familiarity with HEP experiment workflow and software deployment tools.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however
for full consideration, please apply by close of business on September
1, 2016.
Notes:
This is a 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of
renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing
availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have
less than 3 of years paid postdoctoral experience.
Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Salary will be predetermined based on student/postdoctoral step rates.
Berkeley Lab understands the postdoctoral experience in a research
environment is unique. We are committed to the growth and development
of early career researchers in pursuit of becoming next generation
scientists and engineers. Read about the excellent postdoctoral
benefits at Berkeley Lab.
Berkeley Lab addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges
by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating
new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe.
Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been
recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages
Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
