Working Title
Associate Scientist or Postdoctoral Fellow (Physics)
Appointment Type Full Time
Purpose of Position
The Department of Physics, Computer Science and Engineering at
Christopher Newport University invites applications for an Associate
Scientist or Postdoctoral Fellow in Physics, effective August, 2018.
This is a non-tenure track, one year, benefited appointment contingent
upon receipt of funding. The possibility of yearly renewal is dependent
on performance and continued grant funding. This is a sponsored research
appointment with no teaching responsibilities. This appointment supports
a National Science Foundation grant. Applicants must be committed to
undergraduate research and demonstrate the potential for excellence in
research with students.
The Associate Scientist or Postdoctoral Fellow will develop and maintain
software infrastructure for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave
Observatory focusing on LIGO metadata and data characterization. The
successful candidate will develop new software infrastructure to support
the LIGO research mission; operate, maintain, and enhance the Data
Quality Segment Database services for LIGO, including the web-interface,
software packages, and command line utilities in response to user
requests; operate, maintain, and enhance the low-latency segment
generation infrastructure for LIGO, including the software used to
generate, transfer and publish this metadata.
The Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science or a closely related field is
required for the Postdoctoral Fellow level. Candidates who possess the
Master’s Degree in Physics, Computer Science or related field will be
considered at the Associate Scientist level.
The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience with software
development; experience with Python, git, and Linux/UNIX software
development; and possess the ability to travel. Preference will be given
to those who have experience working with LIGO or other scientific data
analysis software, and software development.
