Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in experimental nuclear Physics: University of Michigan



The University of Michigan medium energy group invites applications for an experimental postdoctoral Research Associate. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join our proton radius measurment with the MUSE collaboration at PSI in Switzerland, and our Drell-Yan effort with the SpinQuest collaboration at Fermilab. The MUSE experiment at PSI that aims to reassess the proton charge radius and the discrepancies that remain by performing the first simultaneous measurement of elastic electron and muon scattering off the proton. The successful applicant will support the running of the liquid hydrogen target and take a leading role in the analysis of the data. There is also an opportunity to participate in the SpinQuest experiment at Fermilab that aims to study the u_bar and d_bar Sivers functions and their connection to the orbital angular momentum of light sea quarks, where the successful applicant can take a leading role in the trigger system and in the data analysis.



The successful candidate has the option to be stationed either at PSI in Switzerland or at the University of Michigan. In either case, extended stays at PSI and occasional travel to Fermilab is expected. Previous experience with either cryogenic targets, electronics or DAQ systems will be advantageous.



Applicants must hold a Ph.D.  in experimental nuclear or particle physics. The position is available starting 8/1/2021, or at a later, mutually agreed date. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable by mutual agreement for up to three years. The University of Michigan is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
