Postdoctoral Positions in Space Science and Applications at Los Alamos National Lab
Los Alamos National Lab’s Space Science and Applications group (ISR-1) has openings for multiple Postdoctoral Research Associates with backgrounds in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or related fields. A PhD recently completed (within the last 5 years) or soon to be completed is required.
ISR-1 contributes to a variety of civilian and defense-related programs sponsored by DOE, DOD, NASA, and other US agencies (space.lanl.gov<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__space.lanl.gov_&d=DwMFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=TI1-uR1CNrL-lIqQDSyKdxNA8TlS9bg3dZbKl21HDQU&m=-8y0QvdoxzWdufX-0MQYt86qoKX51nzvVgNdsInkd3pH1uRc1HJAzRnd6f5S-Fqn&s=Fh18Xp8blZr2F6GFYk0E_ss6h7JBZbAL670vvMXmgVA&e=>), including monitoring of the atmosphere and near-Earth space for nuclear detonations. In support of these missions, we develop satellite-based x-ray, gamma-ray, neutron, and charged particle detectors to measure natural and artificial radiation in space. We have an international reputation in the detection of nuclear phenomenology as well as in the data analysis, simulation, and modeling of the natural space environment. ISR-1 is also engaged in a number of pioneering basic-science missions, including magnetospheric physics, planetary exploration, gamma-ray astrophysics, space situational awareness, and solar-terrestrial interactions.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a collaborative, technical research environment. Your skills and ideas will be applied to specific project goals with guidance from senior staff. Our postdocs are key collaborators in the development of innovative solutions to important technical challenges and in implementing new technology. You will also have the opportunity to present research and write internal and external publications.
The LANL Postdoctoral Program is a pipeline for hiring technical staff at the Laboratory, many of whom first joined LANL as postdocs. Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
