N3AS Physics Frontier Center Fellows

The newly established National Science Foundation Physics Frontiers Center -- Network for Neutrinos, Nuclear Astrophysics, and Symmetries (N3AS)<https://n3as.berkeley.edu> – intends to make several postdoctoral Fellow appointments for positions starting in fall 2022.

N3AS is a multi-institutional collaboration linking thirteen partners: UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, U. Kentucky, Los Alamos National Laboratory, U. Minnesota, U. of New Hampshire, North Carolina State U., Northwestern U., Notre Dame U., Ohio U., Pennsylvania State U., U. Washington, and U. Wisconsin. N3AS research focuses on theoretical issues in multi-messenger astrophysics, including neutrino properties and their astrophysical consequences, dense matter, gravitational waves and their interpretation, neutron stars and their mergers, supernovae, nucleosynthesis, and dark matter. N3AS provides a unique multi-disciplinary environment for postdoctoral Fellows to address fundamental questions in astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics, and particle physics. The Network is connected to other initiatives in multi-messenger astrophysics, including DOE computation programs supported by SciDAC and by the Exascale Challenge Program, and international astrophysics efforts supported by RIKEN and CNRS.

Successful applicants will spend the first two years at one of the N3AS institutions. This year available hosts include Kentucky, Los Alamos, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, and Ohio University. The third-year appointment, contingent on satisfactory progress, will provide N3AS Fellows the opportunity to move to a second Network institution of their choice. All N3AS appointments are made through UC Berkeley. The three-year appointment has an initial salary of $70K, a generous travel allowance to enable the Fellow to more easily collaborate among the participating institutions, and a modest relocation allowance. More details on N3AS can be found at https://n3as.berkeley.edu.

An additional position is available this year in gravitational wave analysis and neutron star mergers. This Fellow would be hosted by the N3AS modeling group of Penn State, Stony Brook, and New Hampshire, and would also work in collaboration with LIGO scientists.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. (on or after September 2019) in theoretical physics or astrophysics and the ability to work productively within a diverse and collaborative research environment, producing and publishing original research, and defending that research effectively in seminars and scientific meetings.

Requested application materials: Please submit a CV, a publication list, a statement of research interest, and three letters of reference. Materials should be submitted online at AJO: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/19868

The N3AS Fellows selection committee includes all N3AS PIs. Interested candidates are requested to submit their applications before November 30, 2021 to ensure full consideration. As early reviews of applications will begin November 16, any candidate who can apply by this earlier date is encouraged to do so.

For further inquiries, please contact the chairs of the N3AS Fellows Appointment and Mentoring Committee, Gail McLaughlin and Sanjay Reddy, or the N3AS PI Wick Haxton, at the email addresses below.

Fellow benefits packages will be continuous over the three-year appointments, provided through UC Berkeley. UC Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status.
