Postdoctoral Fellow in experimental nuclear physics
University of South Carolina

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow with the experimental intermediate energy group. The research of our group involves the study of nuclei and nucleons with electromagnetic probes at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).

The successful applicant will support our Muon scattering experiment (MUSE) at PSI. MUSE will measure the elastic electron-proton and muon-proton cross-sections, extract the proton charge radius, directly compare the scattering cross-sections, and study two-photon-exchange contributions. The candidate is expected to support data taking at PSI and take a leading role in maintaining the fast MUSE scintillation detectors, the Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment, and the data analysis. The candidate will also have an opportunity to join the group's activities at JLab. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics and experience with data analysis and scientific computing. Experience with detector hardware is a plus. Applicants should submit a cover letter and a CV and arrange letters from three references sent electronically to Prof. Steffen Strauch (e-mail:strauch at sc.edu). The review of applications will begin on August 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.
