The Collider-Accelerator Department in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Directorate at the Brookhaven National Laboratory has an opening for a Beamline Scientist to join the team at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL). The NSRL is a unique facility providing proton and heavy ion beams to simulate the cosmic ray environment of space. Radiobiology experiments are conducted at the NSRL to help understand and reduce the risks to astronauts posed by space radiation. Electronics designed for space missions are brought to the NSRL to be tested and qualify for mission readiness.

In this position you will interact with researchers coming to NSRL, to help plan experiments, schedule testing, and operate the beamline. Continual monitoring and characterization of the beam are important to the researchers. While providing leadership to the NSRL team, you will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the beamline instrumentation which includes ion chambers, silicon detectors, and plastic scintillators. Opportunities exist to develop new detector technologies improving the control and operation of the experiments and the facility. Collaboration with researchers from the national and international multicultural scientific community takes place daily.
