POSITION SUMMARY

Occidental College and a leading mineral exploration company have teamed up to develop a borehole muon
detector designed to detect subsurface mineral deposits. Occidental seeks to hire a Research Scientist to
to deploy and maintain the first version of this detector.  In addition, on campus, we are working on several R&D ideas for the future.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS

1. Learn how to operate the current borehole detector.
2. Operate and maintain the detector at a remote location.
3. Develop hardware to test out R&D ideas on campus.
4. Coordinate the expansion of any ideas which appear promising.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum Qualifications:
o Undergraduate degree in Physics or Engineering
o Demonstrated lab skills
o Willingness to travel to remote sites to oversee installation and operations

• Preferred Qualifications:
o Graduate degree
o Hands-on experience working with particle detectors
o The initiative and drive to carry out a rapid development of a unique detector
