The Dark Matter Group at Case Western, led by Professors Tom Shutt and
Dan
Akerib, have openings for postdoctoral positions on the LUX dark matter
experiment. LUX, for which Shutt is the Co-Spokesperson, is
constructing
a large-scale dark matter detector with unprecedented sensitivity.
Detector
construction is ongoing at the Surface Facility at the Sanford Lab in
the City
of Lead, South Dakota. Following surface commissioning it will be
installed in
the "Ray Davis" cavern, site of the famous solar neutrino experiment
at the 4850 level. Our group has major responsibility for detector
design and
construction, and Xe purification, as well as involvement in
operations,
simulations and analysis. The successful candidates will also have the
opportunity to participate in DUSEL-related R&D projects aimed at
subsequent
tonne and ten-tonne scale LXe experiments. The Case Physics Department
is home
to the Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics
-- CERCA
regularly hosts visitors, workshops, and other activities (<a
href="http://cerca.case.edu">http://cerca.case.edu</a>). Interested
applicants are asked to send an electronic application in PDF format to <a
href="mailto:LUX_postdoc@phys.cwru.edu">LUX_postdoc@phys.cwru.edu</a> .
Applications should include a curriculum vitae and contain your full
name in
the PDF filename. The candidate should arrange for three letters of
reference
to be emailed to the same address. To receive full consideration,
completed
application including reference letters should be received by June 15,
2010.<br>

Preference will be given to applicants with strong backgrounds in data
analysis, detector operations, particle detectors, data acquisition and
electronics, low-background techniques and purification methods, and/or
Monte
Carlo simulations. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in physics or a
closely
related field. In employment, as in education, Case Western Reserve
University
is committed to Equal Opportunity and Diversity. Case is a recipient of
a
National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Grant
to increase
the participation of women in Science and Engineering.<br>
