The Polarized Target group at the University of Virginia invites
applications for a postdoctoral research associate position. Our
group currently has two research faculty, one research scientist and
one post-doctoral research associate, and 3 graduate students.
The successful candidate will join our group's program of
studies with both polarized and unpolarized targets. At
Fermilab we have a major role in the upcoming polarized
Drell-Yan experiment. At Jefferson Lab we have spokesperson
responsibilities for experiments in Hall A, Hall B and Hall C
with a focus on spin degrees of freedom with both electrons
and photons. Our other major focus is on extracting the
momentum and energy distribution of nucleons in the ground
state of the nucleus, especially the short distance behavior
of interacting nucleons.

Our group has a strong program of target physics studies in
our polarized target laboratory where we have a 4He
evaporation refrigerator working with an 8 T superconducting
solenoid. A dilution refrigerator is under development.
Polarized materials are tested under irradiation and chemical
doping for use in Jefferson Lab experiments.

Opportunities to participate in other related experiments in
all four halls at Jefferson Lab are available. The successful
candidate is expected to play a leading role in the
preparation, data collection and analysis phases of one or
more of these experiments, and is encouraged to propose new
experiments.

The completion of a Ph.D. degree in Physics by appointment
start date is required. Candidates with a background in
experimental nuclear or particle physics are preferred.
Experience in the analysis of spin structure experiments and
with solid polarized targets are important.

This is a one year appointment however appointments may be
renewed for an additional two, one-year increments and is
contingent upon available funding and satisfactory
performance.
