I think it would be better to say that the virtual photon imparts energy to
the quark, and it *tries *to escape (the neutron), but the unaffected gluons
and quarks in the neutron pull it back in.
if you say it gets out of the neutron, that means we have a free quark
running around... outside the neutron...
