JLab employee....
I have a personal example. In my office, which I share with 7 other
persons (3 old guys, 2 minorities, 2 middle aged, 3 young guys), we have
a varied group. Of the 8, I only work closely with 2 others. Normally,
I would have little to no interaction with the others. However, since we
are in cubicles, I do see them and acknowledge them. This has led to us
interacting with one another on a more positive, personal level so that
now we are actually co-workers and not 8 individuals that happen to work
at the same company.
Now, I am not saying that everyone should work in cubicles. Some
people, due to confidentially requirements of their job, have to be in
private offices. And there are certainly others, due to their
demonstrated history, that don't work well with others and it is best
that they have private offices because they still have something of
value to offer the organization.
But if the goal is to remove walls between people and encourage them to
interact with each other, then you have to be willing to start with
removing the walls.
