[Dcouncil] NASA at PrideFest

Hi Mike and Alaina-
Thank you so much for your feedback from an Event Services perspective.

To be clear- I wasn’t imagining that this was something that Event Services would manage alone – if there is interest, I am happy to run point. As mentioned in my email, there are many things to consider for a large event like this – I am not taking that lightly – particularly with manpower. When I said “several volunteers per shift” I meant volunteers before, during and after (and not just the day of the event itself). But you’re absolutely right, Alaina- this would be a big undertaking given the lack of resources/public outreach department.

I would wager that the previous non-science outreach events in the past did not see ~40,000 people in a single day either but am interested in a separate meeting to dive into why you thought it wasn’t successful – and what has changed at the lab since then. We are doing big things and I think if we can share that with a nontraditional/nonscience audience, that would be very beneficial for brand awareness alone. Behind Harborfest, this is the largest event Norfolk has.

This would undoubtedly be a lot of work but I think it is worth the undertaking if there is enough interest from the Council.

Camille- Love to see it, especially in nontraditional spaces. The awareness is so important.

Thank you all for the consideration,
Rebecca

My kids saw a bunch of people from Fermilab marching in the Chicago Pridefest. One held a sign reading something like "Queer science happens at Fermilab everyday." Love it.

Best wishes,
Camille

We have tried to do non-science outreach events in the past before and it wasn’t very successful. That is what we purchased the tent for initially. I would send this request through Lauren however as there may be new interest though.

NASA Langley has a very strong and visible LGBTQ+/DEI program. They also tend to be at all public events like the air show in VA beach as well. They however, have a whole department devoted to these kinds of events, just something to keep in mind. All for doing these kinds of things, but man power is something to consider since we do not have a dedicated division that strictly focuses on public event exhibits.

Best,

Alaina

Hello Event Services team and fellow DEI Council members,

I attended PrideFest in Norfolk over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see a NASA booth. With enough planning and volunteers, I would love to see this type of DEI outreach from Jefferson Lab as well.

Obviously we would need to think about things like

  * Jefferson Lab fact sheets (about us pages)
  * Giveaways (buttons, stickers, magnets, icepacks, sunscreen packets etc.)
  * Science Education involvement as there are many families that attend
  * Interactive pieces (JAG could help here – we have giant Jenga and other items)
  *   Several volunteers per shift
  * DEI initiatives at the lab

Is there any interest about pursuing this next year?

Thanks,

Rebecca
