Good morning,

I was going through the JLab Calendar to add events to my outlook and noticed a discrepancy on the Black History Month Event. The JLab weekly and the description of the event lists it as being Wednesday, Feb 21 at 2 pm in the CEBAF Center, however the event is shown on the JLab calendar for Friday, Feb 23 at 11 am. There is an engineering celebration on the calendar for Wed, Feb 21 at 130 pm. Can we get this updated with the correct date/time across the board to eliminate any confusion for those who would like to clear their schedules in order to attend the BHM event? Thanks so much!

ANNOUNCING 2024 DEIA DEMOGRAPHIC FOCUS GROUPS
As a pivotal part of the lab’s commitment to DEIA, Demographic Focus Groups return for 2024 starting in February. DEIA Focus Groups provide a structured platform for open dialogue, enabling further exploration of specific challenges faced by staff and scientific users at the lab. By facilitating these discussions, the lab aims to gain understanding of our community's experiences, concerns and goals.

Feedback from previous Focus Groups and the Inclusion Survey resulted in several changes and improvements at the lab. Some of the changes include the addition of dedicated mother’s rooms behind the gate, better utilizing closed captioning for large Zoom meetings, enhancing rewards and recognition, and providing increased mentoring opportunities. The lab is also introducing two new focus groups: the Family Focus Group and the Scientific Users Focus Group.

Five Focus Groups convene beginning in February, and the remaining Focus Groups (Disability, Technical Roles and Veteran) will meet in September. The Scientific User Focus Group will be scheduled in March. All meetings are virtual with the exception of the Technical Roles Focus Group, which will be held on-site. All staff and scientific users are welcome to attend. Abstract: Issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in physics and STEM overall have received an increasing amount of attention. Unlike most problems that we have been trained to solve as physicists, those associated with DEI have multiple variables, making them much harder to understand and, consequently, to solve. In this talk, I will try to discuss the sticky issues of DEI from a physicist’s point of view. I give a summary of my current understanding of what are some of the key problems, I share my thoughts on what may be some of their roots, and I give some tips on how to help while minimizing possible arguments. Finally, I give examples of outreach efforts that I have found to be particularly helpful in reducing overall barriers of entry into STEM.
