yes, the filter frame is mounted on the outside along with the filter it holds. I made the cover large enough, in case a 2nd filter and frame is required to provide proper airflow.

Would the actual cutout in the wall that holds the filter still be something like the McMaster-Carr frame you've previously sent?

Let me know if these diagrams make sense. Sheet metal thickness for 14 gauge is 0.0747" (1.9mm). We should verify there is a good location for it inside the laser room.
