Hi,

according to  Maintenance, safeguards, and operational features for exit 
routes:
https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.37

there is nothing that would prevent a mechanism where the Exit sign 
light power is controlled by a relay that detects power
or the loss of it as far as I read it.
However, a "curtain" for example is explicitly not allowed! see: 
1910.37(b)(3)
