After several improvements/modifications to the ECal heating and cooling systems, we need to do another test to ensure we can reach the required temperatures and run the PMTs with sufficiently low dark current. The most important modifications either being completed now or already done are as follows:

The crystal temperatures are being properly read out now as type K thermocouples instead of type J. We expect this to show we can achieve the operating temperature goals.

A second air conditioner system is being installed near the top of the enclosure to compensate for the large temperature gradient of 40 degC we observed. I just received a notice from procurement that it will arrive no later than Thursday. The vent pipe will be extended downward by 3' from the roof so that the cool air entering the top will be forced to fall before exiting and will cool the electronics on its path (see attachment 1 for schematic of new setup).

Temperatures and setpoints are being sent to EPICS and we will work to get them archived

Adding enclosure temperature readback to the GUI.

The proposed timeline for the new test is

Monday: drill new holes near the top of the rear enclosure and install the duct + diffuser for the new air conditioner pipe

Tuseday: finish installing the ductwork for the second air conditioner and insulate the duct pipe for both air conditioners to prevent cooling loss. Put panels back on enclosure and get it light tight.

Wednesday: have everything ready for arrival of second AC unit (drain hose, extension cord, quick connect duct). By this time, we expect the improvements to the controls GUI and hardware to be largely complete and read to run. If this is the case, we would start the heating test Weds evening heating front plates to 200 degC and have someone on shift to monitor the system overnight. Leave PMTs off.

Thursday: second air conditioner unit arrives and can quickly be connected up. Start two air conditioners running. Turn on PMTs so that the full heat load is realized. Continue heating, setting front plates to 290 degC adjusting downward as necessary so that crystal temperatures reach about 220 degC on the hot end. Monitor enclosure temperature and if it exceeds a predetermined limit (42 degC?) turn them off.

Friday: by Friday morning we should now be have stable crystal temperatures in the 200-220 degC range. Check the enclosure temperatures and measure the dark current on selected PMTs to ensure we can run the experiment safely and effectively. Turn off heater system around noon and log conclusions.

Note that we do not expect to need continuous monitoring by the fire safety group. The previous test showed that we are able to run without setting off the VESDA alarms. However, it will be necessary to have a staffed shift to continuously monitor the system and the VESDA levels will be included in that monitoring. At this point we have no variables from this system in the Alarm Handler to notify us of unusual conditions. For example, if an air conditioner were to turn off, we would need someone on shift to notice the increased temperature and turn off the PMTs.
