[Dsg-hallb_magnets] FYI: DSG progress on direct PLC to Cryocon communication

Hi Tyler,

No LCLS system was never intended to be used on the JLAB network. I briefly tried to keep a laptop on JLAB wifi while keeping it's ethernet port connected directly to the controls network but I was having issues with the rockwell administration console supporting RSLinx for an active connection to the controller while remoting in. It would work for a while if I stayed logged in and online, but I could never come back in from say a forced windows update. This was also around when we were having license issues and/or recent windows 10 updates.

When we get back after all this we should be able to have enough time to connect the spare cryocon to the hall b network and install the new cryocon logic on the distribution box PLC for communication to the spare. If a decision is made to run for a few more weeks to gain back some time then we will still be able to continue testing remotely.

-Nick

Hi Nick,

Have you been able to mess with the SLAC PLC any since MEDCON 6 started?

I just tried on the spare that was ordered for Hall B after the comms got moved to be more setup like the one in Hall B: namely the EN2T in the PLC and the Cryo-con are both connected to the same Cisco switch (so no more USB involved).

I'm still seeing delays longer than I'd expect so I'm not sure if there's a timer buried that I've missed or if this delay is expected, or maybe something else?

Hi Probir,

I have been working with Brian on this and have not seen the same scaling with timing on my test setup, but we are running different processors and different firmware versions, and the networking is different as well.

I suggest we test in the hall to confirm how the implementations differ before deciding. We can easily add a temporary Cryocon once the hall opens up to prevent any disruptions before committing to a change.

Best Regards,
Nick

Tyler,

Could you please suggest the one we need to adopt from your findings as conclusion.
Regards
Probir

Hello,

To keep the mailing list informed, Brian has been looking into Cryo's PLC code distributed by Nick for communicating directly to PLCs with Cryo-con units.

So far, he's been able to set up and test 2 versions of direct communication: the version from Cryo and a version using Allen-Bradley Add-On-Instruction (AOI) for Modbus.

Findings so far are that:

  * the Cryo version is more involved to get set up and is slower in communication than the delays set in the routine.
  * The AOI is quick to set up, but does a lot of extra things that are not wanted or needed.

Best regards,
Tyler
