Hello Xiangdong,

The modifications for the LabVIEW program were completed and tested.
Communication settings for the controllers and computer were set and verified.

Today, I was able to test the borrowed GPIB-USB-HS+ adapter and connect the two LakeShores temperature controllers. We have ambient temperature readouts for the LakeShore 218 and no temperature readouts for LakeShore 336 since cable for channels A-D are not connected yet.
Currently, the LabVIEW program can connect with 8 of the 9 instruments/controllers, I'm still working on the comms for the Cryomech Pulse Tube Refrigerator.

For your reference, I have attached a table with the details of instrument and computer serial ports mapping, currently connected I/O sensors, and also detailed status and notes for the communications test performed for each instrument/controller.

The test can continue next week once more sensors are connected.

Regards,
Pablo

Hi Brian,

Thank you very much for your detailed message about the tests that you, Pablo and Don did on Friday, I really appreciate it.

That’s great to hear that all pumps and interlock system worked as they should.

For testing the downstream turbo pump, we can connect the outlet of the pump to the inlet of Pfeiffer H803 multi stage pump. When all turbo pumps are backed by the Pfeiffer H803 pump, the interlock system will be satisfied. We’ll find the vacuum parts to modify the connection next week. So the system can be tested again right after.

Next week, Donald, Phillip, and/or I will contact James Brock tool get additional information about the system.

Hope we can close the loop soon.

Best regards,

Xiangdong

Hi Wei,

We (Pablo, Donald and I) tested the interlock chassis with all four of the turbo pumps operational; can confirm that the chassis will spin down all the pumps when there is a fault and that the 3400 vs 1500 behave differently once the fault is cleared. Not much of an problem as resuming pump operation requires manually turning them on from the local controllers, so just a procedure/documentation issue.

What was unexpected is that if a pump has a failure itself there doesn't seem to be an easy way to clear the fault. Here's the steps we did.

1 - The downstream pump was connected to power/controls, but didn't have any backing vacuum.
2 - When turning on the pump it eventually failed with error code 6 which is related to a startup timeout, this in turn generated a failure on the interlock chassis. So far so good, pump protected itself and the interlock chassis put the system into a safe state.
3 - With the interlock chassis actively indicating a fault there now is no way to actually clear the error on the local controller as it is in remote mode.
4 - We had to disconnect the interlock cable to that pump to prevent it from going in remote mode, which allowed us to clear the fault on the pump controller. We also installed a jumper on the status output to the interlock chassis for that pump, but I suspect that wasn't actually needed.

I'm not sure this is a state the system or interlock chassis was intended to handle. All the other faults we've tested allow the system to immediately run again once the fault is cleared.

While it would be nicer if there was a clear or bypass button as far as we can tell that doesn't seem to exist, but since it is possible to clear the error and eventually run the system again I don't think there's much to do about it.

Donald will work on getting the air lines connected next week so we can test some of the valves.

Hi Pablo,

Donold just informed me that PRad-II target is now fully powered. You can proceed to test all pumps together.

Best,

Xiangdong

Hi Pablo,

According to Donold, Dave finished modifying the Big Bertha and Morgan will switch it on in the morning.

Therefore, all pumps can be tested together.

Thanks,

Xaingdong

Hello Pablo,

Thanks again for your quick response, I appreciate it.

It's enough for me to report at PRad-II meeting tomorrow, I'll figuring out other with Don today (we'll meet at 2:30 for that).

Best,

Xiangdong

Hello Xiangdong,

Find my answers in blue below.

I will find out the status of modifying power distribution box and let you know. For powering the 3400 and 1500 pumps together, can I "borrow" the outlet for the cold head compressor to power the extra pump? Does the interlock care about that? I'll be working at ESB after 2:30 this afternoon for some cabling issues.
There is one interlock that checks the compressor which is labeled at its inlet connector as "cryo-compressor", I'm not sure if that is the compressor that you're referring to. If this is the same compressor, we could try to find a way to force a clear input by wiring the input connector and proceed with the test.
I cannot answer about using the compressor outlet for the vacuum pump since I do not know electrical specifications required, this might be answered better by Donal Williams or another involved person working on the modifications for the power distribution.

Assuming we have all needed (on order) parts, could you estimate how much time needed (only in ballpark) on your side that I can start run the full target on the local PC? With the ERR schedule for 5/9, I am asked to show some testing results and confirming the operation parameters. It'll great if I can wrap up the 1-week test by 5/1.
Modifications for the LabVIEW program to run the system can be done by 4/18.
Assuming all components are connected, operational, and we can get actual variable readouts from the system we can take the week of 21/4 to test the system.
The interlock box test can be done in a day assuming no problems arise in the process.

Regards,
Pablo

Hello Xiangdong,

Interlock Box
Brian and I have been able to test and operate the PRad Interlock Box, here some relevant points:

  *
Noticed some inconsistencies with the provided documentation (relay diagram); made notes to show corrections.
  *
For the test, all monitored variables and operational conditions were forced to stay clear (green LED lights at the front panel of the box).
  *
Operational functions for each condition were verified by measuring voltage at the output relays.
  *
Based on current testing, the interlock box can only disable the pumps; starting pumps requires operating the controller locally.

We need more testing as the vacuum pump controllers model 1500 vs 3400 behave differently—the 1500 can run right away after interlocks are cleared, but for the 3400, the remote mode setting needs to be modified to run them again.
To be able to test 3400 and 1500 vacuum pumps at the same time we have requested to power them on and we have been informed that required electrical components are being ordered and will need to be installed prior to this intent; DSG is waiting on this to proceed with more testing.

LabVIEW Program
I debugged, modified, and tested the existing PRad LabVIEW program to control and monitor target motors; now the LabVIEW program can be used with no issues for each motor.
I'm in the process of modifying the existing LabVIEW program to allow connection of the remaining instrumentation: MFC, pressure controller, vacuum controller, pulse tube, and temperature controllers.
A spreadsheet with the information to properly setup and connect the instrumentation to the assigned serial port for each connected instrument is under development.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Pablo
