[Dsg-hallc_controls] Hall C PLC UPS monitoring task

Hi,
Then it is just one UPS to back up both the SHMS and HMS PLCs on the second floor.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for your replies. They should give us at least a starting point for the task.

We have already looked at the small UPS (an APC model SMT1500RM2U) located on the 2nd floor of the counting house in the rack to the left of the PLC chassis.

We saw only one small UPS in that area, though. This UPS is providing power to two power strips: one in the rack immediately right of it and a second in the rack to the far right. All PLC chassis are plugged into these two power strips.

Would the second small UPS be in a different area?

We'll plan to go down to the Hall and Counting House tomorrow to double check what we saw and get pictures of the large UPSs for our documentation.

Best regards,

Tyler

Hi,

One more small detail....

The small UPSs on the second floor of the counting house will require dataforth signal conditioners if the signal is not fed into a differential mode I/O channel.
Those channels may be few or non existence.
Adding dataforth signal conditioners upstairs will require alot of hardware.
I have attached an incomplete (possible outdated) I/O signal ID spreadsheet for the HMS.

Hi,

The standalone PLC does not have a UPS. There are four UPS that need to be monitored.

HMS has one large UPS located in the HMS detector hut that powers the local racks and one smaller UPS located next to the PLC on the second floor of the counting house that backs up the PLCSs and the I/O chassis.

SHMS has one large UPS located in the SHMS detector hut that powers the local racks and I/Os modules and one smaller UPS located next to the PLC on the second floor of the counting house that backs up just the PLCs for the SHMS.

The large UPS and the small UPS are different make and models. I will have to get the model make from the units.

What I envisioned was using a contact closure or a signal from the ups to give a good status, when the UPS is running in normal mode. Any other mode will be consider a fault. This fault will then generate an interlock signal to all magnets running on that circuit, ie HMS or SHMS.

Simple enough thus far. The kicker is the following, for the SHMS there is no I/O chassis on the 2nd floor of the counting house. The signal from the small UPS for the SHMS wil have to ...
1. be routed down from the 2nd floor of the counting house to the SHMS detector hut where the I/O chassis reside (not going to happen)
2. Use an I/O channel of the HMS, the tag in the HMS PLC will then have to be seen by the SHMS PLC to be able to act upon it. A Ethernet tag could be used or some cross link between the two PLCs. Not sure which way this will work out.

Hi Steven and Mike,

We've started looking at the task on DSG's task list to add UPS monitoring to the Hall C PLC system and have a few questions to start:

1.) How many UPSs need to be monitored with the new code?

2.) Does the standalone PLC test station have a UPS that we could test monitoring on?

Best regards,

Tyler
