Subject: [Dsg-hallc_controls] Fw: SHV Adapter for CAEN A7030TN HV Module
Hi Thia,
I have submitted reqs 386074P, 386073P, 386066, and 386063 for the components to assemble a 36 channel HV distribution test chassis for the Hall C CAEN A7030TN modules. The total for these reqs is ~$1220.
I still have one more req to submit which I estimate to be $440. This last req is for 52 pin connectors and contacts, to replace the ones I have in hand.
By fabricating the distribution chassis we can save a few hundred dollars, as opposed to the CAEN OEM part (~$1900) but more importantly, the CAEN chassis has a lead time of 12 weeks.
As soon as the reqs are approved I can get the chassis box manufacturer a drawing to start the machining (2 -3 weeks delivery) and we can have this chassis completed within 5 weeks or so.
Fabricator Cost Time (weeks)
CAEN 1900 12
Jlab 1660 5
Thanks,
Marc McMullen

Hi Brad,
I have found more cost-friendly part number for HV hook-up wire, so the price for the components has reduced to ~$1700. Amrit has requested me to start procurement of the components to build the test chassis. I will have a req submitted under COPS by tomorrow.
Thanks,
Marc

Hi Brad,
While preparing to set up the testing of the new Hall C HV modules, I noticed that some of the pins on the A7030TN socket did not extend as far as others, I have documented the issue in a short word file. It is attached to this email.
As far as the testing is concerned, I have discussed the matter with DSG management and we have developed a plan to move forward with the module testing.
1. We have obtained an HV breakout chassis, which was initially built to service two A7030L, 24 channel modules. DSG will modify this chassis (extract pins from the Radiall connectors and re-pin) to work with the Hall C A7030TN 36 channel module. DSG will then move forward with channel by channel testing of the Hall C modules.
2. Hall C will still need a distribution box design for installation in the end station. I have developed a parts list to fabricate a chassis with an attached cable, similar to the CAEN product.
* We can improve on the CAEN design by utilizing a custom shielded HV multi-conductor cable from General Wire Products. The length of this cable can be made so that the distribution is much closer to the detector, instead of running long individual HV coax.
* If the length is known, please forward that length and I can work it into the parts list.
* The minimum length for a 40 conductor shielded, cable is 1000' @ $6.28per/ft.
* A quick cost estimate for the parts including a spool of 1000' of the cable is $1700 to $1800 per distribution box, making 17 boxes with 50' multi-conductor cables.
* Adjustments to this estimate must be made if more than 17 boxes are needed or the runs are longer than 50'.
3. Hall C will still need a testing chassis, the chassis DSG will modify for use, will eventually have to be converted back to a dual 24 channel chassis.
* DSG can fabricate this chassis using HV hook-up wire and the same components specified for the Hall use application. We have most of the components on hand, except the chassis box and the spool of HV hook-up wire. Hall C will need to purchase the components to replenish what we have on hand and buy the chassis and wire spool. The total cost is approximately $2400. I estimate 5 to 6 weeks to complete the fabrication, due to chassis and hook-up wire lead time.
* Alternatively, CAEN sells a chassis for ~$1900, however the lead time is 12 weeks.
Please review this information and let us know on the options you would like me to start the procurement process concerning points 2 and 3, as well as your thoughts concerning the module connector pins issue.
Regards,
Marc

dear peter,
i agree with your recommendation.
also, do you have a suggestion for the wobbly pins which marc mentioned.

Hi Brad,
For testing the CAEN A7030TN HV modules, DSG will need a Radiall multipin to SHV adapter.
We're evaluating the cost & effort of making a adapter box with purchasing a box directly from CAEN.
If the cost is similar, I'd recommend purchasing a box from CAEN.
Peter
