hello,
steve woods and i had a short discussion about EPICS, in particular, css-boy screens for hall c magnets and for solid.
steve woods suggested that we have a meeting with steve lassiter, which we'll do, to address all matter with regards to standardization.
i've attached below brian's response (highlighted in yellow) to steve lassiter's questions addressed to bob miller, which by way of krister and brian, i received.
i would like to inform everyone that:
1. dsg (tyler) has worked with steve woods and developed EPICS for the hall c hv system.
2. we (pablo, aaron, peter) are developing for the nps caen system, EPICS based controls and monitoring.
3. we (aaron) are developing EPICS based system for comcal.
4. with regards to hms and shms we have developed several CSS-boy screens ~70 (pablo, mary ann, aaron), there are many more miles to go!
5. for the solid magnet we are also developing CSS boy screens (mary ann, pablo, aaron).
6. for off site monitoring we (tyler, peter) have developed WEDM for hall d and if i recall right for hall c as well.
points 4. and 5. are being done with the idea of standardization across the physics division.
however:
this doesn't imply one has to choose either PLC based HMI or EPICS, one could run both in parallel (which is not my cup of tea)
EPICS could be used just for monitoring, one could deactivate its controls features.
so there are many many choices.
one concern steve woods had is that for halls c&a there is no person like, hovannes for hall d, or nathan for hall b, which is indeed a very important issue.
i requested patrizia to approve pete bonneau (DSG) to do handle this job and she has approved the request.
peter is a super expert in epics with ~25 years of experience in the field.
being a patient man he has been the de facto EPICS/PLC instructor for the young-bloods in DSG.
(DSG has also worked on the PLC programming for the hall c magnets and is working currently on the SoLID magnet.)
dsg is keen to support halls c&a and it would be a privilege for us to contribute to the program.
since i do not know who are on the mailing list, some of you might get doubles (hopefully not triples of this message)
my apologies in advance for that.
amrit

Hall B is 100% EPICS for their UI interface to PLC, no HMI anywhere.
https://clasweb.jlab.org/wiki/images/d/dc/Hall_B_Solenoid_Power-Up_and_Power-Down_Procedure.pdf (Torus is basically the same)
Hall D does have some legacy HMI screens, but they're generally not used and mainly for experts.
https://halldweb.jlab.org/hdops/wiki/index.php/Solenoid_Ramping_Shift
Both are using the Ether/IP EPICS driver running on a softIOC for PLC tags <-> EPICS PVs. Most of this is just read-only in EPICS. We try to limit what can be controlled by shifters (there are additional restrictions that could be put in place [by user or machine] but haven't been deemed necessary).
Anything that an expert accesses more than a few times generally gets moved to EPICS as well. An example of this would be the SOE bits and timestamps for the Hall B magnets when we were getting spurious trips due to LCW issues. Now this is available on a CSS screen and archived by Mya.

Hello,
As far as I know, we use EPICS screens for users to interface with PLC's. I have cc'd Brian and Nick as they know how it all works.
Thanks,
Krister

Hi Krister,
Can you answer Steve's question below?
Thanks,

Hello Bob,
Hall C uses the Rockwell Software Studio for its Human to machine interface (HMI can also be referred to as GUI - graphic user interface). There is a discussion about using other Epics based GUIs for magnet controls, rotation and cryo control.
What type of interface does Hall B use with their PLC controls?
Thanks for help on this
Steven
