Hello,
DSG builds, codes, tests, implements, and supports detector work. The work we perform in-house (EEL), we document and archive. Once a component is implemented in a larger instrument/detector, we do not document what goes on. This division with regards to archiving and documenting is because it is impossible to keep track of all the changes being done to an instrument/detector. The archiving and documenting of what is being done to the instrument/detector is the responsibility of the detector owner. This is the procedure DSG follows with all instruments/detectors in Halls B and D, including the Hall D PLC system and the Hall B torus and solenoid. Further, DSG does not store spares for any detectors. Sometimes, we support a detector manager by procuring components for instruments/detectors, as we have the expertise in that area and at times we guide detector managers with their OSPs, again these are responsibilities of the detector managers.
For example, with regards to the SVT and all its components: We have documented and archived all components that were built by us: HFCBs, sensors, distribution boxes, interlock system, etc. Documentation of changes made and later reconfiguration or re-wiring of hardware of the SVT is the responsibility of the Hall B SVT group.
With regards to the HDICE: We have documentation of all components we have built, coded, and tested. Once these items are transferred to the HDICE lab, e.g. the components we have installed in HDICE rack, it is expected that the HDICE group documents and archives what is done, even if that work is done by DSG .
The wiring diagram for the IBC cart which Andy is referring to was done by Werth Teachy, who supported the HDICE project around 2007—2009. Werth was a member of the Hall B Instrumentation group, part of Hall B. Werth worked alongside HDICE technicians, postdocs, and scientists. In my opinion, HDICE should have, in its own interest, recorded the work done (in this case the wiring diagram) to their instrumentation. Much as it is astonishing, it is clear that it is not so.
Anyway, as Dr. Patrizia Rossi advised me, we are looking to see how to help. We may have to take the IBC cart apart. Peter has called for a meeting with Xiadong Wei and Mike Lowry. At this meeting we’ll discuss how to proceed and how much time it’ll take and how the HDICE staff will collaborate with us so that we do not unwittingly botch up the IBC cart.
Sincerely
amrit
