Hello,

As mentioned by Xiangdong when we spoke earlier, the RF generator from Rack #2 will be used to test Rack #1 until he can get a replacement unit.

Regards,
Amanda

Antiquated HDice instrumentation and computer cause issues on rack #1; not the upgrade work done by DSG .

DSG recommends to improve reliability of rack #1 by doing the following:

1. Replace RF generator model# R&S SMY01 (discontinued by manufacturer years ago) used in rack #1 with the same model used in rack #2.

2. Replace or repair computer.

2.1. Computer crashes caused last week’s failures.

2.2. Crashes cause corruption of configuration settings of hardware.

2.3. Crashes can occur anytime, since computer problems still exists.

Note: LabVIEW FRS program has not changed from the working version on rack #2.

A property transfer of the NMR computers mentioned in the email below is pending approval by HDice.

Hi Xiangdong,

It does not appear to be the fault of the FRS program, but of the RF generator. The RF generator performs a self-test and if there is something wrong with the unit, the status light will blink. Please let us know where there is a spare RF generator and we will replace it.

Amanda

Subject: The FRS program is broken

Hi Amanda,

The FRS program on the NMR Rack 1, which was fixed last week, failed again while I was running it this morning. The "status" light of the RF generator started blinking during the scan and noise went very high. The attached pictures shown:

1. A normal scan from Rack 2.
2. A noisy scan from Rack 1 when the status light blinked intermittently.
3. A noisy scan from Rack 1 when the status light was flashing continuously.

The error message "4" displayed when I pushed the "status" button. According to the manual, this means the RF level setting was not satisfied.

Would you please take a look soon?

Thanks,

Xiangdong

Hi Xiangdong,

The FRS program is fixed now. The program was not working due to an incorrect port setting for the RS-485 hub. We believe this setting may have been changed due to a computer crash. During our debugging, we discovered the computer for Rack #1 crashed every time it was restarted. Pete has transferred the computer to you so that you may be administrator for it. The computer will need to be taken to the computer center to fix the crashes and create the group account previously discussed.

Regards,
Amanda

There is nothing DSG can do regarding the configuration of the computer in the newly completed NMR Rack #1.

Rack #2 computer disk was originally built from the old Rack #2 HDice (non-CUE) Windows XP computer. This disk was upgraded to Windows 7 in ~ 2015 as part of the work required to update LabVIEW on the computer.

When Rack #1 was being rebuilt this year, the computer disk was updated to a Jlab-CUE based machine by the computer center. Any change to the configuration or repair of the Rack #1 computer must be done by the computer center.

DSG has completed the installation of the NMR computers for Racks 1 and 2 in the HDice lab. So we will initiate a property transfer for these machines to the HDice group.

FYI: In the upcoming year, all Jlab Windows 7 computers (including the NMR computers) must be upgraded by the computer center to Windows 10. The required upgrade is detailed on the computer center website here: https://cc.jlab.org/node/818
