[Dsg-reflectivity] [EXTERNAL] Re: UV reflectivity items to buy

Hi Bill,

I indeed received your message below and agree with it. The only correction would be that currently the dRICH is only requiring down to 200nm with SoLID having the more stringent requirements down to 160.

I believe the argument you are making is good and indeed, there already seems to be pushback against efforts outside of the labs.
For our group I believe the strategy is to get strongly involved in the JLab effort and replicate this at Duke. Demonstrating that we have the capabilities to do this here will certainly be important,

Greetings,

Anselm

Dear Beni and all,

I apologize for sending this message late.

It is fantastic to know the procurement of the items is moving forward.

I just wanted to elaborate a little more regarding various mirror reflectivity Q&A stations at Stony Brook, BNL, JLab, and Duke.

I can easily see people ask questions about why we need to fund all of this efforts. Also, whether we are duplicating the Q&A effort.

In my opinion, there is an overall strategy that requires all of the mentioned Q&A stations.

1. Q&A station at Stony Brook (single wavelength @300nm): during the production phase, once a large mirror is coated with the witness samples, how do we know the mirror meets the requirement? A single wavelength measurement at Stony Brook at 300nm is required to determine if a mirror is ready to be sent to JLab for full characterization or needs to be re-coated due to a variety of reasons. This is also a good way to monitor mirror-to-mirror performance variation to reflect the stability of our coating methodology.

2. The BNL Q&A Station is specifically used to measure the witness samples down to low wavelength, it has the unique feature of measuring absolute reflectivity down to 160 nm. This is especially important for DRICH mirrors. Additionally, this will provide important validation for the JLab measurement in item #3.

3. JLab station by Tyler: is needed to characterize the coated full mirrors down to 200nm. Measuring the reflectivity across the mirror is very important. As we already know the mirror center will be coated thicker than the edge, so identifying localize efficiency will be extremely beneficial. Couple this measurement with item #2 will give us a good sense of low wavelength performance as well (via extrapolation).

4. After JLab completes setting up the Q&A station, Duke will probably take over the responsibility of characterizing every single produced mirror. I could easily see it is beneficial to replicate the setup at Duke to utilize the available manpower. There will be great number of mirrors and huge surface area to characterize. Multiple stations will be beneficial for the quick completion. (I assume SoLID will also use these Q&A stations, in this case, it will be difficult to handle the large number of mirror with just one full size mirror Q&A station)

Regarding the stabilized UV lamp for the pfRICH, it was purchased for item #1 (Stony Brook single wavelength Q&A station). However, we don't need to set this up before the full production phase, therefore, we are more than happy to loan it to Tyler to complete item #3 in the near future, and have it return when it is needed.

Hopefully, this is also aligns with the common understanding of others. Please let me know if I missed anything or if you have any questions.

Many thanks

Bill

H Tyler,

ok I think I have the necessary information to proceed.
the charge code (POA) is "EICICH" .....PADMIN.43-012
The activity number associated with the purchase of these items
will be "E1004_03620" of the WBS6.10.04.02

so you can go ahead to initiate the PR with the above charge codes.

cheers,
Beni

Hi Tyler,

great. However, the purchase has to be for the EIC dRICH and it needs to be coupled to an activity
which I first have to find out what it can be. I think I know but we have to create an activity and
move the appropriate money there.

I will talk to Everett to make this happen.

cheers,

Hi Beni,

Below is a shopping cart with all of the Thorlabs components we want to get for the UV reflectivity testing.

In addition to the deuterium lamp Bill recommended and the items I've recommended, I also added a spare bulb for the deuterium lamp.

The total cost for the Thorlabs items is $5,563.94.

The collimator is from Edmunds Optics and can be purchased from their website.

The total cost for the collimator is $215.00.

If I should submit the PRs and make the orders, should I use the same account code we've previously used for other EIC DIRC purchased?
