[Eicatjlab_all_personnel] [EXTERNAL] Reminder: Accelerator Fundamentals Seminar and Q&A Session by Kevin Smith

The next seminar will be the first of two seminars covering linear transverse beam optics. No matter how fancy that sounds, it's not fancy. The material will be very approachable. We'll start to get slightly more mathy than we've been so far, but nothing that would be out of bounds for an engineering graduate. Multiplying 2x2 matrices will be about as bad as it gets. The main topic is "focusing" and we'll discuss so-called weak focusing and strong focusing. We'll go through concepts like field gradients, quadrupoles and betatron oscillations. We'll briefly introduce the basic stability criteria for the particle motion and give an initial introduction to "FODO cell" you often hear about, if time permits. The following seminar will pick up wherever we leave off and finish the initial introduction to transverse particle motion. It will hopefully contain some simple animations that will help illustrate and tie things together.

Then it's on to the longitudinal plane and RF systems.

***We encourage you to attend this seminar in person. See you all tomorrow!***

We are pleased to announce that the EIC Directorate will be offering a series of 'Accelerator Fundamental' seminars that will take place in 2024. These seminars are uniquely designed to provide a welcoming and open learning environment for our newer team members who may have limited knowledge of particle accelerators.

The Third 1.5 hour talk and Q&A session will take place the afternoon of Thursday April 18, 2024, 3-4:30pm, at Bldg. 1005s 3rd Floor Seminar Room (Zoom details below), and will be hosted by Kevin Smith.
