Colleagues:

For quite some time we've wanted to start an Engineering Seminar series
to share common experiences and designs across the Lab's engineering
community. When working with Sally Fisk to initiate this program, we
discovered that perhaps our aspirations were not quite lofty enough. In
view of all the new staff, the many interesting engineering problems
that we solve each day, and the need to pass on our experiences so that
we don't reinvent solutions to common problems we have elevated the
seminar series to a "Professional Development Program". This program
with its first series devoted to cryogenics is outlined on the attached
program poster. We intend to launch this development program after the
first of the year and will invite representatives from local industry
and graduate students enrolled in nearby universities to participate.
During the 6 month downtime we will reflect on what we learned in this
first series and if we have been successful up to that point, expand the
program. We hope to tackle a wide range of engineering subject areas
within the lab and also bring in experts from other science and
engineering organizations so that we become more knowledgeable about the
challenges and achievements of the larger engineering profession.

Take a careful look at the attached program. Discuss your interest in
attending the cryogenics series with your supervisor and then sign up on
the website referenced at the bottom of the poster. The middle six
sessions are taught as a class that builds on information from the
preceding session. To realize the most benefit, you should plan on
attending each session in the series. While skipping one may not be
"fatal", I know from personal experience that you will be challenged to
keep up with Rae if you fall behind. This series is an important step
in our effort to share knowledge throughout the lab's engineering staff
and develop our collective understanding of how engineering advances the
lab's overall mission.

For those who maintain their PE status, this course will be worth 8 CEUs
towards your continuing education obligation for that license.

Please make every effort to take full advantage of this offering.

Will
