Space-Charge Challenges of MEIC

Jefferson Lab’s design of Medium-energy Electron Ion Collider (MEIC) aims at delivering high luminosity, ~10 34 cm -2 s -1 , in a broad range of kinematics. This goal is achieved by high repetition rate collisions of short, small emittance, and low charge electron and ion bunches. It opens a realm of beam parameters that poses new challenges and opportunities for the ion accelerator complex. Here we explore space-charge limitations at various stages of ion acceleration. We propose to launch a comprehensive study of resonance crossing in the presence of space-charge for the Ion Booster, via multi-particle tracking. Through exploring possible mitigation schemes, such as resonance compensation and stop-band correction, one would optimize the Ion Booster’s operation to push the limit of Laslett tune shift above 0.3. Examples of similar studies for the High Luminosity upgrade of the PS Booster at CERN are also described, along with examples of modern space-charge tracking codes. The proposed study program is essential for maximizing overall performance of the ion complex and for bringing the MEIC design to the next level.
