Mont and LL;
Before the stroke of midnight last night the beam was successfully
transported to the Hall-D tagger vault. With this accomplished,
the beam line elements from the photocathode through 5.5 passes of
CEBAF and the new Hall-D electron beam line have gloriously
transported beam! The image below is the beam spot on the viewer
just in front of the Hall-D dump. The camera focus is a bit off, so
the image is not as crisp as most of the viewer images that have
been previously bandied about. In addition to the viewer image is a
screen shot of the beam position monitors (BPM) readings for the 5C
line (Hall-D line). These BPMs are new to 12GeV CEBAF, new
beamline vacuum component, pick-ups and electronics. The technical
staff had made an educated guess at the parameters needed for these
BPMs to work with beam (timing) and they got it right!! The BPMs
worked on the first pulse of beam through the pick-ups. Just one
example of the many things that have gone "right" during this
commissioning phase. This is not luck. This is a direct
reflection of the quality of the staff.

The plan now calls for optics measurements so that we can build on
this accomplishment and bridge from commissioning quality beam to
physics quality beam. These measurements should be completed by
noon on Friday, at which time CEBAF operations will cease until the
Fall.

Cheers!
