ABSTRACT:
The Detector Development Group at LNF (DDG-LNF) has long been involved in the R&D, design, and manufacturing of classical gaseous detectors and MPGDs.
The first work on classical gaseous detectors was on Plastic Streamer Tubes for the Hadron Calorimeter of the ALEPH experiment at LEP in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, we focused on R&D that led to the introduction of RPCs with glass electrodes. This was followed by the design and construction of what is perhaps the largest Drift Chamber ever built, for the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE Frascati Phi-Factory (1993-2000).
In 2000, the group began its journey into Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs) with R&D on GEMs for LHCb at CERN, which later led to the development of the first Cylindrical GEM as an Inner Tracker for the KLOE-2 experiment at DAFNE-LNF.
In 2009, the first tests were conducted on what would later become the µ-RWELL, a revolutionary single-stage amplification detector with resistive coupling, using DLC sputtering on the backplane of the amplification stage.
The seminar will present the most significant results of the R&D on µ-RWELL: from high-rate layouts for the Phase 2 upgrade of the LHCb MUON apparatus, to layout studies for tracking detectors proposed for FCC-ee, as well as contributions to numerous other nuclear physics experiments (CLAS12 at JLab, EPIC at EIC, X17 at nTOF, TACTIC at TRIUMF, CMD3 at Novosibirsk, UKRI at RAL, and more).
As part of a European project (EURIZON) focused on the R&D on low-mass Inner Tracker for next-generation Tau-Charm Factories, we have built the first cylindrical µ -RWELL (C-RWELL).
I will also discuss the technology transfer activities related to µ -RWELL manufacturing processes to an Italian PCB company, ELTOS SpA, which has yielded very promising results.
Lastly, a new idea for RPCs utilizing DLC-coated resistive surface electrodes will be presented, along with the results of an R&D effort on RPCs and sRPCs used as thermal neutron detectors for homeland security applications, such as sensors for Radiation Portal Monitors for airports and ports.
