My general comment on alternative splitter designs is that we should concentrate on getting one end-to-end design working and joined up optically.  Then benchmark "alternatives" against that, on the same basis that they must join up and work.

At the moment the easiest to do in code seems to be a separate splitter line for each energy, even if that gives more beamlines than we wanted.  I suspect the multiple energies in one line would work, but also require each line to be longer because you need more degrees of freedom to correct the optics of multiple independent different energy beams.  So yes, you can have fewer beamlines, but the splitter would likely get longer and more complicated to set up.
