HUGS 2016
The 31st Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies Program at Jefferson Lab
May 30-June 18, 2016

Applications are now being accepted for HUGS 2016 to be held at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia, USA. Deadline for student support consideration is March 15th, 2016.

With support from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Jefferson Science Associates (JSA), the 31st Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies (HUGS) Program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is scheduled to run from Tuesday, May 31 to Friday, June 17, 2016. Students will arrive on Monday, May 30 and depart on Saturday, June 18.

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is a summer school designed for experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics graduate students who have finished their coursework and have at least one year of research experience in these fields. Students who are well into a research project are also encouraged to apply. The program is simultaneously intensive, friendly, and casual. All lecturers are internationally renowned and leaders in their fields. The students will be housed on site at Jefferson Lab, and there will be many opportunities to interact with Jefferson Lab staff, as well as the lecturers, other graduate students and visitors. Acceptance into the program is competitive.

The 2016 school will focus on experimental and theoretical topics of high current interest in strong interaction physics. In particular, students will receive excellent insight into the physics to be studied at Jefferson Lab and at the future Electron-Ion Collider in the upcoming years, as well as related topics of interest in nuclear and particle physics. Speakers and topics this year include:

    * Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions and Quantum Entanglement Christine Aidala (University of Michigan)

    *
Nucleon Spatial Imaging – Julie Roche (Ohio University)

    *
Parton Distribution Functions – Amanda Cooper-Sarkar (University of Oxford, U.K.)

    *
Introduction to QCD – Andrey Tarasov (Jefferson Lab)

    *
QCD and Hadron Structure – Marcus Diehl (DESY, Germany)

    *
Effective Field Theories – Emilie Passemar (Indiana University)

    *
Neutron Skins in Nuclei – Jorge Piekarewicz (Florida State University)
In addition to the main lectures, the school will offer topical seminars by Jefferson Lab researchers. At the end of the school and as an integral part of it, students will have the opportunity to present a short seminar on their current research.

We will be able to offer a limited number of fellowships that will cover lodging at the SURA Residence Facility, where kitchen facilities are available, and contribute towards meal expenses.

To apply to the HUGS 2016 at Jefferson Lab summer school, please visit http://www.jlab.org/hugs/ and submit along with your personal data, a request for consideration of acceptance into the program, and arrange for one letter of recommendation (ideally from your Ph.D. advisor) to be separately sent at the address below. Submission as such before the deadline noted below will automatically place the student in the standard fellowship competition.

The deadline for student support application is March 15th, 2016. Applications to the school will still be accepted after this date but will not be included in the fellowship competition. Students will be notified by April 5th, 2016 of acceptance.
