The deadline for LOI is Feb 28, with a response of March 16.  Deadline for full proposal: May 18.

I’m loathe to say it is a “relaxed” timeline, but it is perhaps more generous than we had anticipated.

Probably the most important task, in particular in view of Feng’s email, is to come up with a list of milestones (by year) across the various topics we identified, and also “teams”, ie which of us, will contribute to those milestones. I’ll make a start on that in the overleaf document over the next few days to give us a starting point for the discussion.

Finally, a few of my quick takeaways from a cursory read below.

I guess this is the meat.  Firstly, there seems to be an emphasis on bringing together hubs of small teams on a temporary basis.   I guess the interpretation here is that you need a well-defined goal(s), rather than trying to initiate a long-term collaboration.  One requirement - “providing a mechanism for placing new researchers in permanent positions in nuclear theory”.

It provides a list of topics at least one of which must be addressed in responsive proposals.  So in our case these are (and probably the only ones):
c) Phenomenology for semi-inclusive/exclusive electron scattering
d) Partonic and spin structure of hadrons.

If I look at the overall topics, I reckon they can broadly be grouped into:
1) Spectroscopy
2) Structure
3) Hot QCD
4) Nuclear interactions
5) Nuclear Astrophysics
6) BSM/neutrino physics

With 4/5 possibly combined. Small-x physics?

Proposals must have lead institution, with other participants as sub recipients.  Leads can be universities, DOE labs, etc. but details I haven’t gone through.  Max of two submissions per institution.

Five-year awards, likely 3-5 awards in range 350K - 600K per year, with minimum and maximum of 250K and 650K respectively.  Note there are 5/6 broad topics above.

Do need to submit an LOI, but LOI doesn’t lock teams/funding/title in stone - though clearly would be good to be as close to final as possible.
