Dear all,
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">That you for completing the “when2meet” poll, though realize some are still on travel and probably not in email contact. The time that seems to have the best overlap with everyones schedules is </div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">THURSDAY JAN 13 at 9am</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Jose, you are the only one who is listed as unavailable. Any chance perhaps of rescheduling? The other time is Wednesday at 5pm, when Jianwei is unavailable.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">The second issue is that the FOA is now out, at <a href="https://science.osti.gov/np/-/media/grants/pdf/foas/2022/SC_FOA_0002643.pdf" class="">https://science.osti.gov/np/-/media/grants/pdf/foas/2022/SC_FOA_0002643.pdf</a>.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">The deadline for LOI is Feb 28, with a response of March 16. Deadline for full proposal: May 18.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">I’m loathe to say it is a “relaxed” timeline, but it is perhaps more generous than we had anticipated.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Probably the most important task, in particular in view of Feng’s email, is to come up with a list of milestones (by year) across the various topics we identified, and also “teams”, ie which of us, will contribute to those milestones. I’ll make
a start on that in the overleaf document over the next few days to give us a starting point for the discussion.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Finally, a few of my quick takeaways from a cursory read below.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Regards,</div>
<div class="">David</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">**********************************************************************************************************************</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Pg. 2</div>
<div class="">————</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">I guess this is the meat. Firstly, there seems to be an emphasis on bringing together hubs of small teams on a temporary basis. I guess the interpretation here is that you need a well-defined goal(s), rather than trying to initiate a long-term
collaboration. One requirement - “providing a mechanism for placing new researchers in permanent positions in nuclear theory”.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">It provides a list of topics at least one of which must be addressed in responsive proposals. So in our case these are (and probably the only ones):</div>
<div class="">c) Phenomenology for semi-inclusive/exclusive electron scattering</div>
<div class="">d) Partonic and spin structure of hadrons.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">
<div class="">If I look at the overall topics, I reckon they can broadly be grouped into:</div>
<div class="">1) Spectroscopy</div>
<div class="">2) Structure</div>
<div class="">3) Hot QCD</div>
<div class="">4) Nuclear interactions</div>
<div class="">5) Nuclear Astrophysics</div>
<div class="">6) BSM/neutrino physics</div>
</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">With 4/5 possibly combined. Small-x physics?</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Pg. 3</div>
<div class="">———</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Proposals must have lead institution, with other participants as sub recipients. Leads can be universities, DOE labs, etc. but details I haven’t gone through. Max of two submissions per institution.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Pg. 4</div>
<div class="">————</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Five-year awards, likely 3-5 awards in range 350K - 600K per year, with minimum and maximum of 250K and 650K respectively. Note there are 5/6 broad topics above.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Pg 9</div>
<div class="">———</div>
<div class="">Do need to submit an LOI, but LOI doesn’t lock teams/funding/title in stone - though clearly would be good to be as close to final as possible.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Pg. 21</div>
<div class="">————</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">The review criteria…. …need to peruse carefully, but milestones are clearly important.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">Lots of details of the precise form of the application, much of which I guess will be familiar.</div>
<div class=""><br class="">
