[Hadstruct] REYES 2023: mentors/speakers needed

Thanks for sending this around Chris.

I had meant to bring up at yesterday's call that Raul had asked if HadStruc would accept a bulk deal. He asked if 2-3 of us could collectively mentor a group of 4-6 of these students. That group could work together somehow on a couple of projects. They had a policy of essentially rejecting no one which is how over 600 mentees and 14 mentors occurred.

If there is any interest in such an idea we could at least discuss it on the Monday meeting.

Subject: REYES 2023: mentors/speakers needed

Dear all,

As the summer is quickly approaching, I wanted to follow up on this email. I am copying others into this email chain, to minimize duplicating my efforts.

First, I am happy to report that we have a new REYES website: https://physics.berkeley.edu/reyes

Since the website and the registration form for students launched earlier this month, we have had already 628 students registered! Meanwhile, we have only 14 mentors registered. This is to say, we are in desperate need for mentors.

If you, your postdocs, grad students, or somebody else you know is interested in being a mentor, I am sharing the links below. Also, we need mentors from as many scientific backgrounds as possible, so please share the links with colleagues in different areas of research.

Finally, we are also looking for engaging speakers that are willing to give talks to general audiences. The link is also provided below.

I hope to have a meeting in the next couple of weeks with interested mentors to go over expectations and answer all questions.

All the best,
Raúl

Dear all,

I am very happy to announce that the REYES team is actively working to host a fourth installment of the REYES summer program starting on June 26, 2023.

As a reminder, the goal of this program is to provide opportunities to aspiring scientists from across the globe that, in general, do not have the great resources we have. One way that we aim to do this is by connecting students with scientists and engineers like yourself that are willing to volunteer their time to mentor the students for a period of 4-8 weeks.

If you are interested in serving as a mentor, either for the first time or for your second or third time, here is the form to sign up: https://forms.gle/LL5yjuBFwwA5uQUy8

Should you have any questions, I am happy to answer whatever questions via email or zoom. The basic idea is that you would need to propose a STEM-related topic to guide the student through. This could be original research or a guided literature review.

Feel free to share this message with other scientists and engineers in your inner circle, including postdocs and grad students, that you believe would serve as impactful mentors. The more the merrier!

Cheers,
Raúl (on behalf of the REYES Team)

p.s. UC Berkeley is generously backing the REYES program this year. We will have a new website and email shortly. They will also be supporting the participation badges for students and mentors. In the meantime, you can still access the old website at odu.edu/reyes.
