Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting: March 14, 2017
1. Thia Keppel
a. Senior Staff
i. Hall C KPPs complete, submitted to DOE
ii. Student audit email sent – Read it!
1. Must be in contact with university advisors
iii. Property Validation - Get it done!
iv. 10 LOI’s were submitted for LDRD
1. There will be more proposals
v. EIC Accelerator R&D Review (last November)
1. Nuclear Physics submitted FOA’s, helping with transition team
vi. NAS studies ongoing
vii. Safety
1. Late last Monday gate to Hall C beam dump cooling system found open (contrary to sweep)
a. No beam – but still a violation, also alarm didn’t work
viii. 2K cold box trip
1. CC5 tied to CHL1 – tripped
2. Tried to restore it, wouldn’t levitate
3. Similar to previous CC4 failure
4. CC4 was “ground to pieces”, seems similar but they don’t know yet
5. CC4 and CC5 copies of each other, CC4’s spare on way back, not sure of status
ix. Cryo is looking at ESR loads now
x. Time to start looking at lab planning, students, publications….
1. 31 PhDs last year
xi. Lab looking at 2 different ways to distinguish photon/neutron dose:
1. Ion chamber technology, compare 3He to 4He signals, double chamber in Be shield
2. Fiber optic changes in Si optical properties, different response to damage in photons/neutrons
xii. This photon neutron work has 2 patent disclosures
xiii. Also Paul’s neutron shielding is patented
1. European spallation source also using a variant
2. Now trying to make a stucco-like shield for thermal neutrons
2. Robin Wines
a. SBS
i. Continue on vertical support details, bracket drawings, polarized 3He target, BB detector frame
b. PREX/CREX
i. Updating cost estimate and integrating target info
c. SoLID
i. Updated model with magnetic analysis results and summarizing magnet status for document
3. Jessie Butler
a. Worked with designer on setup for PREX and SBS
b. Sorted documentations for CLEO magnet and stored it in document cabinets
c. Built a low voltage circuit that will be used to test automatic valves
d. Rebuilt vacuum pumps and ordered parts
e. Helped with angle changes during Hall access
4. Jack Segal
a. Rebuilding controller boxes that had pneumatic valves removed previously for repair of leaking nitrogen controller valves
b. Received new shipment of spare valves
c. Discussions with Sasha to devise a method of measuring input gas flow using an analog pressure sensor at GEM chamber input
d. Plan is to order sample pressure sensor and test for response at 0 to 60 mbar
