This may be a silly question but why CLAS?

CLAS = CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer
TLAS = TJNAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer

Doesn't sound as nice and that's for sure.  Anyone know?  Maybe the 
acronym has been used so long its been promoted to a word.  CLAS does 
sound good.
