The Saclay target has never had its heat load measured. It is cooled by liquid helium from the Hall B Buffer Dewar. The helium is returned warm thus it is a pure liquifaction load on the ESR. The actual heat load was never measured. These tests are being done to determine the actualy heat load of this target.
The cryotarget is in "cryostat regulation mode". This means that it has liquid helium in its buffer tank. There are two methods for keeping helium in this buffer tank. The original method is batch fill and the second it continuous fill using a liquid withdrawl valve in the buffer dewar.
The heat load while in cryostat regulation mode should be identical to running the target in "empty target mode".
Presently we are in continuous fill (not batch fill) mode. We have a warm flow meter system measuring the full helium flow through the target prior to sending it back to the referigerator.
The total helium flow, reads 250SCFH air, measured on a dwyer flow meter calibrated for air at 1 atm. This converts to 0.9g/s helium taking into account the difference in gas and that the gas (helium) is at 1.2 atm.
The other way to operate is to batch fill the reservoir and I will try to determine if that method is more efficient either Monday or when time allows.
We also need to determine the power requirement when the target is full with both Helium or Hydrogen. This should be done next week.
Once all data is taken we can compare it to the Hall D target built by the Target Group to see if there is a significant saving in "power". Of course any load off the ESR is a plus, but there will be Hall B targets that do require a buffer dewar and also return the gas warm, so that load will never fully go away.
