[Halld-cal] Investigation of "noisy" sensors

Hi Orlando et al.,
I have taken a look at the Hamamatsu data to try to identify and select
the "noisy" sensors. Attached is a text file of the Hamamatsu data for
all 4000 sensors, a script to read in the data and output plots. Take a
look at plot_Hamamatsu_c2.png. Histogramed are the dark rate, dark rate
RMS, and correlation between the two. The dark rate has a tight
distribution between 10 and 30 MHz, with a small tail to 35 MHz. There
are no sensors with a DR>40MHz (our spec is 100 MHz). The RMS
distribution is not as concentrated, with a small tail extending out
past 20MHz (max on the histogram). In the scatter plot one can see that
there is very little correlation between large DR and high RMS. If
anything there is a small anti-correlation.
One can also take a look specifically at the sensors that Orlando
identified on Tuesday:

Indeed, these sensors have a very large RMS, indicating that a single
cell is very different than the rest. However, the overall dark rate is
quite in line with other units. In fact many of them have relatively low
(average) dark rate to compensate for the outlying cells.
My conclusion is that these sensors, while in some ways anomalous, are
no worse than most of the other sensors. Therefore, I conclude that NO
SPECIAL SELECTION SHOULD BE MADE BASED ON THE DARK RATE OR DARK RATE RMS.
I would appreciate prompt feedback if anyone has looked into this further.
