[Halld-controls] Group area for Hall D Online and Controls

Hi,
At Controls and Online meetings we discussed the possible need for disk
space that is accessible by embedded computers, controls components,
EPICS IOC's, etc. Here we were talking about space for config files and
program, not for voluminous data. Two possibilities arose:
- purchase a computer and set it up as a mini-fileserver
- get space on the CUE /group disk system
I propose we try using the CUE /group system to start, then buy our own
if this does not work out. Paul L and Kelvin E tell me there is no
problem getting 5-20 GBytes on /group and setting it up so it can be NFS
mounted by any of our computers on any JLab subnet. My experience with
getting /group/da and /group/halld mounted on computers on the controls
and DAQ networks bears this out. They can allow mounting via explicit
IP address, or via IP ranges, which would help minimize the number of
times we need to ask them to add to the list.
Note that in the former case we'd be responsible for maintaining the
computer and disks, performing backups (or arranging with the CC for
backups), etc. Everything is taken care of automatically in the latter
case.
To start I propose we ask them to create /group/halldonline (suggestions
for a better name?), initially allocating 5 or 10 GB. Then we can try
mounting the new area from EEL 126, etc. and see how it works.
Comments? Discussion? Criticisms?
Thanks,

Sincerely,
Elliott
