Subject: Message from Mont re 12 GeV IPR2009
September 24, 2009
Dear 12 GeV Upgrade Project Team,
I am keenly aware of the pressures on members of a project team
undergoing a review such as has just been experienced by the 12 GeV
Project team. As we have discussed in the past, we take seriously what
the review team has to say about us because they are fully paid up
members of our field. They enter the process with our respect.
As I mentioned at the close-out, I was very impressed by the level of
preparedness of our team. The talks were clear. We were responsive to
questions. We were not defensive. These all speak to our having an inner
confidence that we know what we are doing. And the committee recognized
these qualities.
The committee also found some issues with which it is not so
comfortable, so, as they are asked, they told us. They may not have got
things perfectly right; there may be subtleties and nuances which they
missed, but they flagged the issues which disturbed them. It is
important that we not shrug off the issues. We should take them
seriously, not panic but adjust our posture appropriately and try to
address the problems.
I can see that the quality of the work which you produce is of the
highest quality. It makes me proud and I have no doubts about our
ability to deliver on the whole project. If you like warlike metaphors,
there are many, if you like labor metaphors they also abound. The fact
is that we are engaged in the project. It is our project, ours on which
to succeed. And it is also ours to enjoy now and when we reap the
physics rewards.
Good job,
Mont
