Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, June 7, 2010
Present: Fernando Barbosa, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Mark Ito, Lubomir
Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Elton Smith, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott
Wolin, Beni Zihlmann
Eugene
* BIASOL has been emptied
* tomorrow, Warren will discuss options with Mont
* payroll expenses are a major contributor to on-going costs
* the emptying of the account happened a little earlier than Warren
expected because of the rigging expenses (bringing coils to Test
Lab)
Mark
* worked on order for FSU PMT's
* compiled a list of tagged releases on a wiki page
* added documentation to the wiki pages for LOCAL_HALLD_HOME (insure
builds using only information local to a particular HALLD_HOME)
* initiated discussion of event-level calibration constants (as
opposed to run-level only)
* reviewed calibration database privilege scheme for CLAS
* worked a bit with Elton on UMass MOU
* set up the cron job to run b1pi script automatically
* worked with David on bullets for the offline for Curtis's PAC
report
* posted David's build make system (BMS) document
Beni
* worked principally on cosmic ray test stand, looking at FDC
prototype chamber
* looked at using the IU chambers to measure resolution of the FDC,
they may not be good enough
* can use IU chambers to test efficiencies however
* getting 97% efficiency for wires
Lubomir
* Brian will bring fixtures for wire stringing from UVA to JLab today
* Bill can modify things in the set-up, permission granted from
Nilanga
* will use use room F117 for storage
* hole in the wall slated for mid-July
* discussing with Bill putting procedures into Fastrack
* first article PC boards will be here in July
* cathodes: PR not yet submitted, will likely be sole-sourced, might
take a while, perhaps end of Sep./beginning of Oct.
* some minor modifications remain, holding up procurement of cathodes
* plan: estimate time for production, looks like about 1 year,
* status of offsite space: Tim said PR was supposed to go out today
+ move of clean room to experimental staging area being
contemplated (new building near north linac)
* flash ADC data analysis being refined, more data would be helpful
* resolution numbers are converging
+ numbering scheme, resolved by Beni
+ resolution from strips, very good, in a 10x20 cm area, 100
microns when using all strips.
* playing with Garfield, simulating resolution
+ experts say that Garfield is reliable (mature program)
+ trying to optimize configuration, 200 microns best so far
Yi
* finished SiPM annealing test, will hand over samples to Carl
* 1x1 mm device goes to Hall A for another test
* working on neutron simulation in Geant4
* for coil test: working on HMI control program
* Eugene: Hall A started last week, will continue for quite a while
Fernando
* has not received boards for 1x1 mm device yet
* working on FDC grounding scheme, close to final configuration
* looking at the first layer only he sees a difference between the
outer cathode plane (closest to the outside of the gas volume and
the inner cathode plane, the inner is much noisier, still
investigating the cause
* made a PR for ADC chips for Flash 250, will purchase 20 modules
first, the balance later
+ in Spring of next year go for two fully assembled boards
first, then assemble the other 18
+ this PR is 25 k$
* 20 k$ for FY11 budgeted
* some Flash 125 purchase planned for FY11
Tim
* CDC: communication issues with spec on feed-throughs
* FDC work coordinator: 4 resumes in hand, 2 more today possibly, no
drift chamber experience in this bunch, but lots of construction
management experience
* FDC frame drawings waiting for Tim's signature
* CDC inner skin was supposed to be done at CMU, but will be done
here, 0.5 mm fiberglass
* still waiting on tagger magnet info from vendors, info originally
due June 11th, extended 1.5 weeks
* tech group working on solenoid
* solenoid coil 2: found short, stainless strips in winding shorted
on inner wall to ground
+ put some g10 in there, got rid of short
* coil one: still trying to do leak test, tester is not in hand,
waiting on the Vacuum Group
Elton
* responses to RFP for SiPM's have come in, Wed. meeting of technical
committee to review responses
+ question: what to do about radiation, need a go-no-go answer
before we send response to procurement
* overall schedule: make award by Sep. 1, before then could pull
back, Sep. 1 target because of reviews (e. g., from DOE for sole
source) so answer should be in hand as far in advance as possible
* Yi: fluence estimation in geant4
+ will produce neutrons
+ [discussion on whether we need to involve Pavel Degtiarenko
ensued]
* working on induced currents and heat transfer for solenoid coils,
comparing notes with Eugene
* FCAL readiness review: Jun. 23, 24
* Elton going to advanced photon symposium, Japan
Sascha
* MENU conference, GlueX talk went well
+ COMPASS analysis, leakage of 2+-, killed E852 signal, showed
more data, but nothing on 1^-+ state,
+ photoproduction from CLAS, lots of results
+ discussion from LEPS, SPRING 8, θ(1540) pentaquark, a few
"funny" talks, open question
+ nice talk from BES III guys, using GPU's for partial wave
analysis, they have a lot of software ready to go
+ report from PANDA, a lot of progress
+ Belle and BaBar, 38?? resonance, measured in D^*D production:
confident that the state is a molecule
* pair spectrometer: about to finish study, write up note
* talked to Hai yesterday, he actually promised to prepare software
for playback mode to write different samples to different channels,
want progress before trigger workshop in July at CNU
* we also need to push forward shipping of pair spectrometer magnet,
Liping will be at JLab this summer, might be a good time to ship
it, need to check on storage
* Tim: current plan calls for Nov. time scale for storage, Liping
mentioned testing at BNL
Elliott
* Online meeting Wed.
* two students working: ROOTSpy, event display
* Mantis bug tracker working outside the lab
* problem with CODA software distribution system, does not work for
offline, they need to fix it
* lots of progress on EVIO, proposal to be made soon
* shipped something to FSU, probably a discriminator
* coil test: B-field near power supply on racks 70 Gauss, Cody
investigating
* where to put racks? Tom vetoing current location in Test Lab
* carbon glass calibrations, Meyer Glass, will be OK, temperature
control monitors flexible
* safety review July 2 tentatively, writing assignments due Jun. 30
* safety interlock system has been worked out, fast/slow dump
strategy, two hard-wired systems for magnet power supply
* wiring going well, next week, end-to-end wire testing
* programming seems to be going well, Mark Wissmann's time is hard to
get, but Tim has it under control
* want to test in F117
* do we need a printer for Test Lab? tried to get one out of suplus,
may have to buy one
* Fernando: the discriminator sent to FSU was a TI
* Fernando on wiring tests: was this planned? recalls programming and
wiring was going to be done in a week or two weeks
+ Tim: 12 weeks was scheduled, 16 man-weeks, but controls for
magnet was supposed be done a long time ago
+ Eugene: the scedule has run long by a factor of three
+ Elliott: factor of 2
+ Fernando: schedule is effecting space planning
+ Eugene: want to finish connecting in mid-June, testing will
take a month according to Scot Spiegel
+ Elliott: wondering if PLC testing is included in Scott's
estimate
+ Tim: there is a schedule that says we will be finished June 1,
next target is mid-July
+ Eugene: essential parts only should be tested
Simon
* just checked in vectorized special instruction code
* David and Simon working on a magnet specification document, work in
progress
* more uniform field: looking at getting more mileage from helical
fitters, Riemann fitter, elegant and fast
+ even if field is perfectly uniform, still issues for low
momentum protons
+ if less swimming, fitting can go faster
