Hall D Staff Meeting, June 21, 2010

    Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir

    Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin, Beni Zihlmann

Eugene

      * BIASOL, emptied: 1.0 M$ direct costs, 1.3 M$ total
           + got some new money, mostly from electronics, some from
             software, about 250 k$
           + TDC has been pushed back, does not seem a problem, enough
             exist already to test FDC prototype
           + 140 k$ was added to account already, should take us a few
             months down the road
      * New hires: got OK to hire another physicist
           + plan is to use old interview
           + if other applications come in, they will have to be combined
             in the process
           + ad came out last week
      * space in F117
           + Fernando needs more than two benches and some storage space
             for PC boards for FDC
           + need to identify other needs before solenoid racks move out in
             July
           + Lubomir: wire winding will not be needing space
           + Elliott: detector group has stored some stuff in the room
           + Tim will head up space negotiation
      * Hall D ready for equipment: Dec. 2010; beneficial occupancy, Dec.
        2011
           + pushed back from earlier schedules
           + Hall still a construction site in when ready-for-equipment
      * Blue Crab situation
           + Claus signed PR for clean room, 250 k$
           + A/C another 100 k$
           + this was done with Virginia money
           + Tim: we asked for class 10,000 clean room


Mark

      * PO for Paul's TOF phototubes has gone out
      * MOU from FSU has come back
           + added item for amorphous radiators in addition to diamond
      * assisting communication in setting up grid client tools here at the
        lab
      * attended first EVMS meeting
      * prototype of perl script driven particle gun generator
           + idea: use script to control
                o particle type
                o initial starting point
                o momentum
                o number of events
           + used to test residuals from new FDC


Beni

      * FDC testing with cosmic rays
      * middle plane has 97% same as top plane
      * middle plane harder to keep at HV


David

      * attended presentation at the Governor's School by James Codega
      * working with Justin Berry, working on ROOTSpy, Justin climbing the
        learning curve
      * working with Andrew on event viewer
      * Micah, CNU masters thesis student, finishing up, defense at end of
        summer
           + made a poster, 2nd place at Users' Group Meeting
           + finishing simulations for thesis
      * working on 48 core machine test, gave presentation at software
        meeting
           + 80% utility with ALT1
           + Kalman fitter: 20%
           + Vardan, CLAS12 Kalman filter: 30%
           + multiple processes: better scaling
      * parallelism workshop
           + orgainizational meeting last Thursday, Ed Brash, Dave Heddle,
             Ole Hansen, David, and Simon
           + two-day plan:
                o parallelization
                o GlueX tutorial
           + Dec. or Jan. at CNU
           + first draft of JSA proposal written, 8 k$
      * calibration and condition database
           + DocDB document exists
           + want to include event indexing as well
           + requires changes to API in JANA
           + has delayed JANA 0.6.2 release
      * tracking: work on ALT2 fitter, 25 to 30% done
           + optimized for speed, standard parametrization
           + hoping for factor of 2 to 10
      * magnetic field map
           + doc on docdb on specification


Elton

      * attended Advanced Photon and Science Evolution Conference in Japan
           + meta-materials
           + laser applications
                o 3-D pictures of outer orbitals of nitrogen atom
      * readiness review at IU this week, starts Thu., leaving Wed.
      * working on calculations for quenched conditions on solenoid
           + hard to see how coil could burn up
           + needs to be verified
           + need critical current information from engineers


Yi

      * working on HMI for coil test
           + want to have Mark Wissmann test PLC's
      * SiPM project
           + Carl did test of 3x3
                o increase of dark current same as increase in dark rate
           + 1x1 exposed in Hall A
           + Radcon suggested using source on SiPM
                o used to calibrate detector
                o one 3x3 and 1x1
           + simulation of Hall A: floor plan given to Pavel


Lubomir

      * analyszing data from flash ADC tests of top layer
      * looking at variation of gain, resolution at various places on the
        chamber
      * two problems
           + see a cut-off of high amplitude signals from anodes, related
             to CDC problems?
           + signals from top strips are bigger than those from bottom,
             variation of up to 40%


Sascha

      * implementation of playback mode now works,
           + can write different data to different channels
           + can read out all of memory
      * local mini-workshop on trigger on July 8
           + homepage and registration page set up
           + another iteration on agenda with Chris was done
           + Sergey Boyarinov will present Hall B scheme
           + Brad Sawatzky will present Hall C scheme[?]
      * trying to finish study of microstrip readout of pair spectrometer
           + rates
           + tagger calibration feasibility
           + some simultaions with background being done
           + draft this week
      * received the diamond from element 6 for Richard
           + 4.5 x 4.5 mm, 10 microns thick
      * Elton: are tagger calculations done?
           + Sascha: parts are done
           + need to update geant geometry
                o new magnet, vacuum chambers
      * learning to use Ansys to generate field[?]


Elliott

      * Andrew working on event display; demo at online meeting
      * Mantis issue tracking in preliminary production
      * Networking over in Blue Crab; Rusty standing in the way
           + Printers will be ordered
      * Wiring is done
           + Scot Spiegel managed project
           + Slava working on drawings
           + PLC's in F117, Mark W. working there
           + two UNCW students working with Mark Stevens
           + B-field considerations: all the analysis been done to locate
             equipment
           + options being explored, 5 Gauss field should be OK
      * Safety meeting tomorrow, report due this week
      * EPICS to PLC stuff working, Wesley
      * HMI stuff needed for wiring test
      * Grand Canyon talk


Simon

      * 48 core test, trying to understand behavior of Kalman filter
        running diagnostics
           + for 1 thread: not a cache miss problem
      * magnet re-design, more uniform field
           + helical fit with perfectly uniform field
           + work in progress


Tim

      * George has been on vacation; filling in
      * Coil 2 support fix turned into machine shop; making G10 spacers
           + over 1,000 strips altogether
      * shorts found and fixed in coil 2
           + stainless band grounded to outer housing
           + band shorted to coil, all the way to the copper
           + appear to be a lot of band-to-copper shorts
      * contract for moving yokes has been awarded, July 13th, tentatively
      * coil 1 is finished, leak checked, getting ready to move
      * solenoid replacement
           + plan ready for finalization
           + best thing: continue with testing, start designing a single
             coil
      * civil
           + all concrete walls up
           + solenoid base plates should be in place soon
           + stainless steel lines, fish through[?]
      * tagger magnet out for "sources sought"
           + 6 companies have expressed interest
           + due Thursday
      * move in ARC, engineering staff going to 5th and 2nd floors from 4th
      * CDC inner skin prototypes have been produced
           + 1/2 mm G10, 7.5" diameter
           + glue ends together
      * interviewing
           + FDC construction manager interviews in progress
           + need to decide on number of techs
           + need another general tech
           + engineer interviews in progress as well


Questions

      * Eugene to Simon: different field map, if more field in the middle
        and less at end would we be better off?
      * Eugene to Elliott: what is time scale of test, before we move racks
           + end-to-end test, channels in PLC to sensor signal
           + fake signals will be supplied
           + to test as a system: probably not enough fake signals to
             simulate multi-channel events
           + Mark W. looking at how much can be done in the room
