Hall D Staff Meeting, May 24, 2010
Present: Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Elton
Smith (chair), Sascha Somov, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin
Elton
* solenoid, work continues on
* feed back from Lehman review
* received more indirect information from DOE
* Mont is supposed to report on this by mid-July
* need a plan for how to address the issue
* internal review committee Bill Schneider, Paul Brindza, Steve St.
Laurent[?] reconvened recently
* will have weekly meetings on this issue
* by end of June need a plan, what type of design, how it affects
schedule, a look at outside firms, Jim Fochtman will be dedicated
to this
* need a list of requirements for the magnet
+ field magnitude
+ uniformity
+ fringe
* Simon and David will look into uniformity
* time evolution of thermal short in the magnet, temperature rises by
4 degrees
Elliott
* got student from Yelena Prok to work on rootspy
* the student on event display doing well
* mantis issue tracking software issue: security, offsite access
* limitations to evio found, random access i/o, get rid of event
blocking
* coil test manpower: Wesley, controls; Cody, safety interlock system
+ Wesley putting cryo group epics variables into plc
* fast dumps vs. slow dumps discussion
+ PLC controls slow, not fast
* need carbon glass calibrations
* safety meetings starting Tuesday
Yi
* continue with solenoid test work, learning P&I diagrams, will talk
to Josh about details, will talk to Mark Wissmann to start on HMI
programming
* continuing test of SiPM radiation damage, recovery time 7 to 10
days
* will do another 1 mm x 1 mm test; Carl not ready yet, Hall A
running for next 4 weeks
* dose normalization still being studied
Lubomir
* analyzing data from prototype,
* comparing flash 125 with integrating adc
* wire position resolution < 400 microns, implies cathode effective
resolution < 100 microns
* subtract noise (coming from CAEN HV supplies) by looking at non-hit
channels
* signals from different cards sometimes come at different times, by
8 ns
* plan to build another prototype layer with new mechanical design;
schedule is tight
Beni
* working on cosmic ray test
+ got correlations for cathode
+ efficiency very low when four strips per plane are required
* CDC straws look streaky, working on an action plan
+ Tim: email from vendor, aluminum rollers will not be used in
future, will re-look at packaging for shipment
* gas system put on hold purchasing-wise, budget used up for this
year
* some time spent on system for storing information in database for
manufacturing and connections
+ looked at IRMIS for this as well
Tim
* coil 1 in middle of cold shock
* coil 2 getting opened up
* tagger magnet preliminary specs and drawings are out, went to about
ten vendors, supposed to get info back from them by June 11
* will have internal review [on the solenoid? on something else?],
people from lab
* cryo from CHL-to-Hall work, will be reviewed later, Jim F.
sidetracked on new coil design
* CDC tooling to do inner skin getting made
+ g10, 1/2 mm
* two new techs started
* FDC work coordinator, one application, a civil construction
management background
* Tech 3 position also out, may snag one as FDC work coordinator
* another engineer to be hired in June
* Bill Crahen working on final drawings for FDC, all changes made,
updating procedure, need a traveller
* Slava Ramyslovich working on CDC gas plenum detail drawings
* magnet installation in Hall issues: filler plates, baffles, design
almost done, drawings started
Mark
* makefile work:
+ dropping hardwired path in libraries/HDDM
+ using HALLD_MY for include files for Utilities/hddm
* reviewed NIM article for flash ADC timing studies
* MOU review work, FSU, UMass
* wrote some documentation on setting up environment
* checked change request for Offline Computing
Sascha
* finishing write-up of calibration of tagger microstrip detectors
* thinking how to proceed with Yerevan involvement
* we are borrowing pair spectrometer magnet from BNL, one or two
magnet candidates in mind for use with microstrips, but big magnet
needed for scintillator hodoscope
* Liping interested in getting magnet
* trigger test stand situation: discussing with Hai Dong how to
proceed with playback mode
+ Hai is implementing new feature, different samples to
different channels
+ next plan is to use a two crate system, problem is that there
are not enough boards and crates, crate was stolen
* Chris Cuevas organizing a trigger workshop in July, Serguey
Boiarinov will participate
David
* James finished work on rootspy, new student will take over
* time spent on tracking, limited by rate
+ re-write, new swimmer, only goes 30% faster
* CLAS12 software workshop tomorrow
* GlueX software workshop, discussion on Wednesday
* will start work on specification for calibration database system
Simon
* has developed custom matrix classes
+ put into Kalman filter, speed up by 2 to 2.5, almost to factor
of 3
+ checked in
* three vector version also written, not yet checked in, some
alt1-generated questions
