Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, April 11, 2011
Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, David
Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Elton Smith, Sascha Somov, Simon
Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin
Eugene
* If budget agreement goes through on Thursday then in another week
or ten days the Office of Science will know about the size of cuts.
* This week there is a DIS conference at the lab, lots of talks from
LHC, HERA, JLab,...
* There will be a tour which includes Hall D on Wednesday
+ Tour guide crew: David, Elton, Yi, and Eugene
+ Thanks to David for updating posters
+ Two coils already in the hall
Mark
* Some work on offline documentation
* TOF: Trying to decide on overall geometry: size of counters
arrangement of light guides
* Start Counter: Latest tests with SiPM do not give adequate
resolution
+ Will try new pre-amp with 4x4-cell array
+ Sascha and Valery Baturin testing time resolution with LED
pulser
* Target: Tim will start running the target meetings; more focus on
mechanical design
Simon
* Taking over strip gain calibration from Lubomir
* Working on tracking errors, chi-squared distributions
+ Issue with pedestal noise for FDC strips fixed
* Work on PID scheme continues (but on back-burner)
David
* Looking at resolution in BCAL with course and fine segmentation
+ fine segmentation better than coarse, in energy and angular
resolution
Lubomir
* Four samples rigid flex, conductive tape, put in hall C, cannot be
accessed easily
+ 10-100 kRad per ?
+ expect 100 Rad/year in Hall D
+ will go and get samples Wed., expect about 5 kRad
+ there is a monitor from Radcon in the Hall connected to EPICS
* production of FDC
+ started, not as quickly as expected, as is to be expected
+ epoxy rather than clamps to apply rohacell[?]
+ one production cathode produced
* Full-scale prototype turned vertically, gas started, iron source
test planned
* Room 126 looks empty now
+ Eugene: no surrender of real estate!
Hovanes
* Starting this month, spending for online software has started,
according to the schedule
+ looking at framework items in plan, especially display
management
+ Accelerator uses EDM
+ CSS looks good, used at Oak Ridge, DESY
o consists of a set of plug-ins
* Ordered PC104 computer, will be used as embedded EPICS IOC
* ROC CPU's will be delivered beginning of June
Sascha
* Test of the SiPM's with Vitaly Baturin
+ 1 mm x 1 mm cell, 3 mm x 3 mm cell, and 4 x 4 cell array (of 3
mm x 3 mm cells)
+ Amplitude decreases by factor of 4 from 10 kHz to 7 MHz,
significant degradation at 500 kHz (the "halfway" point)
+ pixel recovery time looks too long, something like 10
microseconds would explain effect
+ effect studied at various amplitudes, worse for higher
amplitudes
+ 25 and 50 micron SiPM's have been ordered
+ Timing resolution, degraded by factor 1.5 to 1.6, from 240 to
400 ps, at high rate
+ looked at array, behavior good, amplitude stable
* Learning how to use run control for trigger test
+ time scale driven by wait for flashes, device drivers
* Looking at tagger microscope prototype data taken in Hall B
+ there are a few bad channels
+ timing resolution reasonable, 300 ps
+ prototype was not calibrated
Elton
* BCAL modules stacked up for machining, now finished
+ shipped modules 25-28
+ getting access to [23]Pansophy to keep track of modules
* Concept for monitoring BCAL, based on design by Athens, with
modifications.
+ Controller board feeds LED boards, pulse 10[?] at a time
+ small PR for 3 k$ to build 2 controllers and 80[?] LED boards
will be submitted
+ MOU with Athens under-way
+ FCAL can use the same system
+ procedure for mounting on BCAL not finalized
+ Need to finalize light-guide design for the BCAL, attachment
point of LED an issue here
* Mechanical prototype for one wedge of cooling going to shop,
expensive, need to look at design and simplify
+ Two electronic projects on same board
1. amplifier summing board, schematics and layout done
2. bias and temperature compensation scheme
* Regina will build an extra module, they have enough fibers, will
buy some additional lead
Yi
* SiPM first-article test, 76 of 80 tested, at room temperature[?]
+ will repeat tests for a few
+ will irradiate some
+ these better by a factor of 3 in dark rate than previous
samples, not known why
+ PDE 20% as expected
* Production test planning thinking: can tiles be grouped to reduce
number of channels? No.
+ Using 32 channel QVC (ADC) reading out individual cells
* Production units arrive in August
Elliott
* Online meeting Wed.
+ review tasks for online
* Student from Yelena Prok to port [?]
* Student from Dave Heddle and Yelena for event display
* IRMES installation stuck in cyber security approval
* UPS for counting house can be installed as early as Nov.
* All phones will be VOIP
* MYSQL configuration for online and offline will be discussed
* Test stand for control system being assembled
* Coil test: leak being worked on, bellows being fixed
+ Jonathan Creel: two weeks
* VME-based DAQ system: need to build some things, will tap Chris
Stanislav for protection box
* Cody Dickover started on Danfysik PS task
* Auxiliary test that everyone knows about
+ need software for VME boards
+ three week time-scale
Tim
* Hall itself: stands for collimator due this week
* Platform, Apr. 15, package goes out
* Sample of new CDC straw tube, aluminized Mylar, production tube
sent to Lamina, resistivity good, from [27]Sheldahl
* Tagger bid, all paperwork is done, tying up procurement package,
vendor chosen
* Pair spectrometer, hope it gets here soon
+ basic test will be done at BNL
