Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Bert Manzlak, Lubomir
Pentchev, Elton Smith, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin, Beni
Zihlmann
Eugene
* Raises
+ there was a freeze, but some room for Lab to give small raises
+ raises to those hired before June 2010, size small, tuned by
management according to their rules, 0.5 to 2.0%
* IT review
+ Mark gave presentation
+ recommendations not wrong, they reviewed whether our
requirements are reasonable
+ Hall D is new, tracking in our geometry unexplored,
fundamental uncertainty larger for D than for B
+ committee didn't see enough structure in code development
+ Eugene: no coordination with physics goals
o vertical coordination missing
+ lots of optimism from IT about providing resources
+ but...what if estimates are off? 20%? 30%?
* New hire
+ 30 applications for new physicist position, we could use help
now
+ committee: Eugene, Glenn Young, Elton, Tim, John Domingo,
Brian Moffitt
+ will look for 2nd candidate at the same time
o hire next fiscal year
o interest in GlueX physics important, possible role in
coordination of data analysis
+ some letters not quite in yet, want to finish first cut this
week(?)
* there are office space issues
+ Cody got office near hovanes
+ new physicst will share with cody
Elton
* Two visitors from MIT coming Wednesday
+ they will work on conceptual design for replacement solenoid
+ Elton wants to talk to George, Tim, and Elliott about a
schedule for them
+ George: drawings?
* BCAL project has been going well
+ exchange rate with the looney on par with dollar, caused
over-run of 300 k$ to cover currency fluctuation, though 50 k$
of actual overrun
+ very little rejection of fibers
o for little cost will build another module, Project OK
with cost
o PR goes in today
* Eugene: status of read-out?
+ mechanical, prototype pieces have been purchased at 8 times an
affordable cost
+ electrical, 1st design for whole thing, finding issues, boards
have been put together, rise time too slow, unclear what
solution will be
+ want to start ordering production components this fall
according to schedule
+ Eugene: can it be delayed? Elton: would like not to have
schedule slip
* design issue, granularity of the read-out
+ summing scheme matters, but initial results are not fully
trusted yet
+ additional material impacts efficiency, in region of last
plane of FDC's, material coming from electronics mechanical
support and cooling
+ George: EHS&Q's Bruce Lenzer an expert on functional analysis
o what are critical areas
o am I paying for things that are in fact critical?
Bert
* Conflict with Hall C meeting, Bert and Javier will cover both C and
D meetings
* Bert is our point of contact for safety
* Elton: Paul Collins's relationship to Hall D?
+ right now things being done here generally go to Bert
* Tom Carsten's concern via George: is there a standard OSP for
Physics about man-lifts
+ Bert: one is going around now
+ addresses platforms, rails, harnesses, fitting of harnesses,
approved tie-off points, tie-off strength in pounds per person
+ look out for sharpshooters
* construction area had a recordable injury
+ stepped off one working surface to another, twisted ankle
+ person given restrictions
Lubomir
* testing first cell, tomorrow move to EEL 126
* problem cannot use source at Blue Crab
+ Bert: no RCA at Blue Crab ever
+ Radcon says no, but more discussion will be held
+ transporting a button source "beyond scope of the license"
+ consistent with previous story that that we cannot use source
off-site
* second cell is almost ready
+ Chris Stanislav did good job populating PCB's, would be happy
to have him for further work
* third cell: technicians are working on it
* for second cell, need to clean wire frame, will clean with alcohol
* HV on first cell OK except for 1 sector, 2100 V on others
+ have all channels working except one
* for second cell, plan is to start assembling it
+ do not have gusset ring for both sides of package
+ option: use empty frame for now, but risk damage when
disassemble and re-assemble with proper part
* size of dead area of chamber: need decided now, may start with
smallest dead circle size
+ Sascha Somov has calculated size: 2.7 cm radius for first
package
* problem wih AC, temerature was increased from 69 to 72 F
+ humidity went from 45 to 54%
+ has been put back
Simon
* working on simulation of FDC response
+ make more realistic by putting in clusters
+ also simulate electronics response
* working on for CDC as well as FDC
+ working on magnetic field and Lorentz force effect
+ drift time depends on magnetic field
o from 1.5 to 2.(?) Tesla, 50-50 mixture shows 10's of ns
difference in drift time
o 90-10 mixture: effect is large, 100 ns or so
Tim
* installation meeting this morning
+ revitalize discussion of cabling of FDC, CDC
+ not looked at for two years, tooling of installation depends
on this
+ decided to make mechanical mock-up, BCAL cables, FCAL, CDC,
FDC too
* Hall D access
* there is a COO for Hall D, please to back and read it
+ must access through accelerator site now
+ call Tom before you start work and get his approval
+ if work going on with construction, need long pants as well as
other PPE, e. g., hard hat
+ if you drive through construction site and get out of vehicle
there, need full Ballard PPE
* upstream platform bids by Thu.(?)
* grouting of rails for FCAL platform ready to go(?)
Elliott
* almost have agreement with DAQ group on support tasks
+ simulated evio output file
+ event builder
+ dis-entangler
* crates and rates study
+ need Dave need to get the right rate
* controls meeting
+ gas system P&I presented
+ SiPM cooling P&I an unknown
* setting up control equipment in (?) with Hovanes
* task for undergraduate
+ Eugene: field vs. current, lag, eddy currents
* Dmitry Romanov is back
* coil test
+ coil 2 is going great
+ pumping and purging, mechanical stuff is done
+ no leaks so far
+ perhaps cool as early as next week
+ Cody working in Danfysik
+ thinking of getting Danfysik to work on platform a year from
now, coordinating with other Halls
+ question: one or two quench protection channels?
George
* yesterday, pumping on helium circuit, lot of water was absorbed by
Micarta
+ cannot do a good leak test, put in some current to heat things
up
+ over weekend had a cryogenic volume filled with nitrogen,
warmed up, when opened this morning water at the bottom
* have not been able to detect any leaks so far
* leaks between cryocan and coil, internal to system
* see 10^-6 standard cc of He per second, want 10^-9
* Jonathan Creel came back from cryogenic conference, a lot of
interest in poster from people who had worked on LASS magnet
+ when integrated over several decades, a pretty large community
apparently
* bids for filler rings and BCAL supports came in at 167 k$, just
about right
+ a good vendor: made all dipoles and yokes and assemblies for
CEBAF
* do we need racks to be moved to below 50 Gauss or can we increase
the cladding? Tim consulting with Floyd Martin on this
* Wayne(?) now doing drawing for platform around magnet
+ are we going to fill space with Cerenkov counter? if so we
need to leave room in platform design
+ consensus: please leave space for a Cerenkov counter
* safety item: troughs in Hall are uneven, a footing hazard
Hovanes
* playing with Beni's flow controller
+ a good sandbox for evaluating control system
+ CSS display manager, looks good
* PC104 computers
+ ran an IOC, control module
+ pxc booting linux system
o Sasha and Brian put up a tftp server
o changed it to used halld group disk area (M drive)
o each readout controller needs access to this area
* got 5 vme cpu's, ordered in march, looked different from Sergey's
+ have not been booted yet
* room 126 is ready, racks are there, can put modules in, there is an
HV and a VXS crate in that room
+ chassis for PLC, make a test stand, Beni's gas system(?)
o make a gas panel for testing
o Elliott: will need Windows computer for Allan Bradley
software, or not
Beni
* implemented simulation for geometry of BCAL read-out with material
for cooling of SiPM's
+ try to calculate efficiency for photons in the gap
+ goal: turn-key code system to generate efficiencies as
function of energy and angle
+ extra material may not be as bad as long light guides
Fernando
* Cody Dickover started last week
+ from FEL
+ helped with solenoid power supply, he will start with that
+ that PS came from Hall A, radiation damage suspicion
* talked to Scot Spiegel, ready from electronics standpoint for ???
* personnel: lots of applications for 2nd technician
* if you have requests, send needs, and how long it will take, to
Fernando
* procurements:
+ LVPS systems, at procurement
+ cables at procurement, finance part needs to checking off
* Naomi tested ABD HV board
+ ready to go into production, need 149, will order 160
* pre-amp cards: working on to sending to Procurement
* these procurements run out the money for this year
* bcal read-out
+ electronics on a board, 1 in. or 2 from SiPM
+ U-board attached to mechanical piece
+ two cables that bias and takes signals
+ electronics works, impedance of the cable is the problem
+ 16 cells being read, high capacitance
+ any additional resistance or inductance in series degrades the
rise time
+ if reactance is significant, see an increase in rise time
o important for timing: part of signal goes to
discriminator
o other part goes to adc
+ do not have resolution to measure such small ???.
+ did calculations, inductance of 100-120 nH
+ ran simulations, got exactly results seen in lab
+ two options
o if timing is important, two components
# fast rise time, 15 ns is the spec
# keep pulse widths below 80 ns, 100 in spec to
Hamamatsu
# can compensate to decrease rise time
# or decrease the length of the cable
# if done at the ?? should be fine
# see if one (?) is feasible, ask Jim Fochtman
# Beni: is cliping an option? Fernando: would like to
stay away from shaping
# still doing careful measurements should have a
document this week and move forward
o if we cannot decrease length of the cable that much, move
preamp from the preamp board to the uboard, that resolves
both issues completely, but raises thermal issues
* Eugene: plans for Cody? Fernando: we have lots of instrumentation
(?)
+ test preamp
+ test ASIC's, but actually Fernando will do this
o we will have ASIC's next week
+ develop testing infrastructure for preamp
o would be nice to do automated tests
o if not, do checks
+ flash 125 interface with Gerard
+ testing of the tdc's
o student from UMass here to get started with flash 250's
o idea is to get him fully trained
+ Hovanes control system will need help with boxes
+ Elliott: with the new technician, the more he nows about
controls the better
o Fernando, if you have a request for work let me know in
advance so work can be scheduled
o brought job description: job is a II
o if you have a requirement let me know
+ technicians will be used where needed
+ Chris Stanislav: Fernando talks to him everyday, wants to put
a hold on him, restrict projects he works on
+ Cody has experience with electronics
David
* looking at event size
+ problem with hdgeant: crashes when adding beam-induced
electromagnetic background
* resolutions: getting things correct in smearing
* documentation of source code
+ so that non-familiars can work with code
* Eugene: BCAL summing, time-scale? Dave: when do you want it?
segmentation answers in next month should be do-able
+ Elton: fine and course segmentation comparison the issue
o energy resolution not far off
o position resolution, related to timing, more complicated,
need more sophistication in simulation.
+ Eugene: benefit from help from others? Dave: hard to say
+ Elton: Andrei and Irina also working on this
+ Fernando: right now in the 334, if no further issues, we are
in good shape
o if additional 8 channels, especially on inner part,
problematic for electronics
o if answer ready in a month changes can be accomodated
Mark
* request for more work space, 7 TB -> 30 TB
* elected to User Group Board of Directors, computing responsibilties
* start counter: leaning toward FMPMT's
* MOU's
+ FIU about to go into concurrence chain
+ UMass in concurrence chain
