Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, May 23, 2011

Eugene

* Make sure your SAF110 KD training is up-to-date. Only Simon and Tim
have done it thus far.
* operations budget: rate of spending roughly on track for this
fiscal year
* lack of coordination of students doing physics analysis
+ please consider attending the physics meeting and providing
feedback
* Magnet
+ coil is cold
+ there is a short to ground, we are running anyway
+ 6 Heim columns equipped with strain gauges, each one has two
actually for different directions
+ sum of "radial" gauges are actually axial
+ OPS signed, will work without radial Heim column read-out
+ George Biallas calculated that with worse case placement of
helium vessel with respect to vacuum vessel, maximum radial
force will not exceed strength of columns
+ measuring field strength on inner bore, that senses any
asymmetry
+ hopefully today we can go to full field

Mark

Spend much of last week preparing for the Review of IT in the 12 GeV
Era.
* Review focussed on Physics preparation more than originally
anticipated.
* Concerns regarding Hall D:
+ D’s requirements not as well defined as other halls
+ Software head seems to have insufficient authority to direct
software development priorities (i.e. software architect)
+ 2 FTE seems too small for 40% of effort planned for Jefferson
Lab
+ Hall D Offsite computing & networking requirements nebulous

Beni

* Magnetic field tests of electronics
+ CAEN mainframe tested in magnetic field, about 80 Gauss, no
indication that anything bad was happening
+ VXS crate tested at 40-50 Gauss
+ so far so good
+ talked to Weiner rep., he expects that VXS would not work at
70 Gauss
o but they had a client that needed 150 or 200 G, client
built shielding, mis-designed by factor of two, but crate
still worked
o fans is the limiting factor

Tim

* Memorial Day barbecue at Tim's on Sunday
* going to town on intrastructure and installation
+ water lines
+ need to look at gas lines
+ chilled water for FDC
+ things are getting crowded around upstream platform
+ new model of FCAL platform and rails
o statement of work written by Facilities
o install by july
+ SOW for upstream platform just written by Facilities
* pair spectrometer paperwork signed, might get it in a few weeks
* straws should have been shipped Tue morning
* Sascha: Liping Gan will be here with two students in June
+ one will work on the pair spectrometer
* three summer engineering students working for Tim
+ room on second floor of ARC: head count at 14 now
* Beni: need to push TOF partial design for SOW
* tagger magnet: next Wed. vendor coming here to discuss, a plan
should be written by end of this week
+ they have been submitting plan for handling metal
+ they are supposed to start getting ready for casting steel
itself
* 10-inch beam pipe between tagger hall and Hall D all welded-up now

Sasha

* working on trigger and hardware
+ has VXS crate with no boards
+ got Linux controller from Sergey
+ working with Chris Cuevas's group implementing playback mode
for trigger
o two crate set up
o working with Hai on scaler for flash
o Hai needs to do some programming
o Sasha will learn VHDL
o looking at root client server
* working on pair spectrometer design
* got quotes from Saint Gobain on price of small tiles
* trying to summarize studies with Vitaly Baturin
+ building a black box downstairs to continue tests
+ looking at an optical bench for test stand, SiPM, and light
source
o there is a off the shelf for 1500$ , sho
* planning to go for a long vacation, starting June 9, for three
weeks

Hovanes

* for two weeks, working on EPICS driver for gas system modules
* mass flow controllers, will have 4
* serial interface, can program all parameters through EPICS driver,
e. g., flow rate, blend of different channels,
* done with nice architecture
* should do Canbus for FCAL this way
* generally works
* need to build gas system to check components

David

* updated monitoring histogram planning document, in DocDB
* BCAL segmentation issue
+ current plan to sum some SiPM's into a single electronic
channel
+ alternate plan: fine segmentation scheme, more than factor of
two in cost
+ simulation studies done by Regina folks, then verified by
David
+ fine segmentation is better; against expectations
+ look at whether this conclusion is robust
+ adding realism to mcsmear,
+ added extraction of hits in a cluster to KLOE code
+ instead of energy deposited, calculate number of p.e.'s, smear
according to results of SiPM tests
+ looking at how timing resolution develops
+ David attending meetings with Elton, Zisis, Andrei, Irina,
Matt S.
+ proposes that we fix number of dark pulse generated to 120 per
event in the BCAL, will raise event size about a kilobyte from
the current 15 kB

Simon

* strip-to-strip calibration
+ particular algorithm for charge from FADC data
+ studying if there is there benefit from an ADC on anode wire
o can compare charge on with that on strips for background
reduction
o timing difference can also be used against background
o modification to smearing done, time-to-wire smeared
correctly, for strips was not done properly, shuffling
things around to make consistent
* use data on prototype with cosmics to test agreement with
simulation
+ problem found with FDC simulation code, bug being fixed
+ CDC simulation code bug as well, accounts for part of bad χ^2
o in transition regions, where track exits straw
o true point-of-closest-approach beyond end of straw
o have a fix for that but it is not being called

Lubomir

* collecting tools and parts, by end of week will assemble first
chambers
* end window done by tomorrow, glueing down ground now
* one cathode done already
* attaching rigid-flex to cathode working
* works better if contacts are tinned; more reliable
* glueing needed to be repeated to get good contact, will continue
with tinned contacts
* wire frame was done two weeks ago, but 2 wires need to be replaced
* need pin rail to string the two wires, it was sent to CMM, waiting
for it to come back
* moved full-scale prototype to Blue Crab
+ installing on jig plate
* radiation testing of rigid-flex assemblies
+ samples of rigid-flex put in Hall C for radiation tests,
retrieved two weeks ago, look OK
+ dosimeters cannot be read out (nominal 0.5 kRad limit), not
sure about dose
+ other samples that were in C, retrieved last week, near a
CARM, dose of 0.5 kRad
* working on tracking to find algorithm for common noise subtraction
with FADC
+ Gerard wants to zero suppress first; not enough bandwidth for
all of the data
+ idea: reduce amount of information, analyze signals below
threshold
o works, but depends on type of noise
* Eugene: glueing was OK wasn't it? L: things changed, longer foot,
pressure changed, heating element changed (but not the likely
cause)
