Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, October 24, 2011
Present: Vladimir Berdnikov, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Cody Dickover,
Hovanes Egiyan, Nerses Gevorgyan, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir
Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Dmitry Romanov, Sascha Somov, Simon Taylor, Ivan
Tolstukhin, Elliott Wolin, Glenn Young
Eugene
* Lehman review last week, two recommendations
+ do a failure mode and effect analysis for the solenoid
+ radiation hardness of SiPM's, continue tests
* we have a budget for one month
+ we should act as if we have all of the money, go on with
scheduled procurements
+ light-guides for BCAL awarded to Santa Maria, 300 k
$
+ read-out scheme for summing BCAL
o will need change request of about 350 $k: need a good
physics case
* installation started in Hall
+ minor problem with solenoid, mismatch of positioning
* need to speed up online/DAQ stuff
+ Nerses is working on it, another visitor coming
+ need help from DAQ group
* TDR:
+ Lubomir and Simon will put in tracking
+ Elton to coordinate calorimeters
David
* working on BCAL segmentation issue
* pushing forward: want solid basis for change request, from
resolution to physics result motivation
* can match 2006 beam test result for energy resolution now
Mark
* MOU's and contracts:
+ UMass MOU waiting review from Rhonda Scales, then ready for
signatures
+ FIU MOU fully signed at FIU, getting signatures here
+ FSU construction contract needs sole source statement
* New volatile disk available from Computer Center
+ Hall D: 10 TB guaranteed, can use up to 40 TB if available
+ Lustre file system
+ New rules for automatic deletion of old files, over-quota
situations
Cody
* test stand for pre-amps up in the data center
* developing LabVIEW application for test
* have FADC-125 that we will use
* Gerard has made connections for new FPGA layout, now laying down
traces
+ time-estimate: 2 weeks (perhaps)
* translator boards for Beni's stuff on the way
Nerses
* working on JLab discriminators
* measuring time to read-out scalers
* 4 scalers per channel, gated and ungated, two thresholds: TDC and
trigger
* EPICS application
* writing the epics driver
* hope to use during beam test
* all 66 scalers read-out in 125 microseconds
Sascha
* DAQ system to measure timing resolution for SiPM's running now,
work with Ivan
+ using new libraries for Linux, CAEN TDC's
+ cannot run with fast VME bus
+ running with old VME
* will get another crate, install realistic trigger and clock
distribution, for FCAL test
+ reading out blocks from two boards and making them compatible
with analyzer
+ scalers for FADC
+ one set to data stream, separate data type
+ also need some for occupancy, monitoring
o client/server system ready for that
o putting code into FPGA
+ want to have implemented by beginning of November
Dmitry
* calibration database tested with new build of sim-recon
* working on website for viewing
* beta release shifted to next offline meeting
Ivan
* SiPM recovery time studies
* working set-up downstairs
* large amount of light, 50% of pixels
* signal from generators to LED, from other generator delay line to
second LED, 10 to 140 ns
* look at amplitude of signal from both flashes
+ 50 micron device: recovery time 50 ns for single pixel
according to Hamamatsu, observe 45-60 ns from set-up
+ 25 micron device: 25 ns and 35-40 ns for same
* rise-times: 5.5 ns for 25 micron, 8 ns for 50 micron
Vladimir
* assembled package, checked all cells, a few noisy channels
* rotate top cathode board
* noise on strips: found a problem with resistor
Lubomir
* on Vladimir's noise problem:
+ noise not seen on wires,
+ amplitude reduced when connectors on rigid flex fixed, factor
of 4 reduction
+ frequency less than 1 kHz
+ will open chamber to try to fix it
* problem with network at Blue Crab for several weeks now
Simon
* working on implementing improvements to tracking code
* faster
* better understanding of errors
* reports of events that crash the reconstruction
+ not seen before, special event that is problematic from Igor
* updating tracking note with more details
Yi
* finished SiPM NIM paper, posted on DocDB, submitted to journal
* database set-up to store specs from testing of SiPM arrays,
first-article and production
* last week, bias voltage review, Jack McKisson gave talk on plans
for temperature compensation network
+ should work well
+ two concerns
o increasing of leakage current, bias voltage will start to
drop, will need adjustment of supply voltage
o beam on/off bias voltage stability, seems not to be an
issue according to Sascha's simulation
* testing has not started yet
+ optics set up
+ waiting for cooling plate, pre-amp
Elliott
* meeting on Wed.
+ discriminator
* ordering stuff
+ network equipment
* farm manager completed by Vardan
+ he will move to top-level control stuff
* new version of EVIO checked in
+ has half of planned improved functionality
* electronic logbook and database applications, discussions with Dave
* Andrew, checked in his summer work
* Graham has been asking about work plans for DAQ group
* controls
+ solenoid redesign
o FMEA
o meeting tomorrow
+ address Director's committee concerns
+ Giles Brown getting involved
* Eugene: What is solution for fast read-out?
+ looking into solutions
* conditions part of CCDB, relation to EPICS archiver being discussed
* Wesley Moore being courted for Hall D work
Hovanes
* control for HV for FCAL bases, IU wanted to install there, done
+ want to use during beam test in Nov.
* framework for control and monitoring: Control System Studio (CSS)
will be used
+ implemented two components: display management and data
browser
+ need to implement data archiver
o ACC wants us to use theirs, not compatible with CSS
+ new alarm handler product, CSS
+ how to integrate DAQ into CSS to yield unified display
