Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, June 18, 2012
Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, Vanik
Kakoyan, David Lawrence, Bern Manzlak, Lubomir Pentchev, Elton Smith,
Sascha Somov, Vladimir Tarasov, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Elliott
Wolin, Beni Zihlmann
Eugene, Announcements
* New travel policy:
+ title and abstract must be submitted with request for foreign
travel
+ cap on total cost of attendance from DOE labs to a given
conference
* MOU with foreign partners now needs security approvals
* golf carts cannot be owned by individuals
* we need a governance document for Hall D for the long shutdown,
Bert will send to Eugene and Tim
* budget planning for various scenarios continues, no action yet
* schedule for running: Hall A first, 6 months later Hall D, year
later B and C
* PAC will discuss tentative schedule
+ for Hall D, only two experiments have been approved
+ GlueX has a run proposal: phase I, II, III
+ PrimEx may get a commissioning run
Tim, Construction and Installation
* tagger magnet: all coils wound and insulated, tooling for potting
almost there
+ 2 of 4 steel pole pieces completely machined
+ no voids found so far
* tagger vacuum chamber out for fabrication, Bill Crahen will visit
next week, should be done by Sep.
* cladding coming in, all of it by end of month
* downstream platform just about done, some welding left, out for
painting at end of week, we will see it at end of month
* concrete shielding mostly installed in collimator cave
+ two inches of lead encased in steel will be there as well
+ Elton: is there a place to add additional shielding? Tim: a
few options exist
* tagger hall: planing dump skid, ordered parts for LCW installation,
survey has marked spots for magnet stands
* fixtures for BCAL: waiting on spacer plates, tooling otherwise
mainly done
* CDC, FDC fixtures: tooling out for bid, get it back by end of week
* cryo platform out for bids, not back until next week
Elton, BCAL testing
* decision made on gains
* decision made to run SiPMs at 1.5 V above breakdown
* new board will incorporate these decisions
* Tara Bogart, student, working in mini-BCAL, mainly monitoring
system
* chiller working, slight leak in one of the valves
* monitoring system working as expected
* next step is to get DAQ running
* not enough signal distribution boards and trigger interface boards,
ten of each needed
* want to test new boards before going into production
Lubomir, FDC
* working on 4th package now, 3 cells installed and tested, have all
parts for the next 3
* power outage at Blue Crab today
* tomorrow: finish one wire frame and cathode frame and continue with
stacking
* testing the first 4 wire frames, one cannot be used (water damage),
second also showing problems
* need additional PCB sets, will need one or two more wire frames
* two more frames need to be tested
* Vlad in charge of channel assignments to modules in the crates
+ in flash-125, central FPGA is the data bottleneck
+ want to equalize rates on the modules
+ all central cards will avoid each other, they will go to
different fadc modules
* waiting for grounding clips before checking 3rd package
Eugene, Budget
* CAEN TDCs for TOF would cost additional 100 k$, cannot take the
increase, if collaboration wants it we need a physics case
David
* working with students
+ event display
+ mini hbook with rootspy
* working on analysis of FCAL data
* working on pion polarizability with Rory's post-doc
Sascha
* working on PAC presentation for rare eta decay
* Richard sent specs for procurement of scintillators and SiPMs, will
go with 50-micron pixels
* attempted contact with Hamamatsu, no response, RE: 3x3 mm SiPMs for
microscope and pair spectrometer
* working with Mike Dugger on triplet production polarimeter, Ashot
will get involved, A. is responsible for converter
* trigger test in 117: there exist problems to be dealt with
Mark
* UMass contract: terms and conditions negotiation
* software review work
* new tagged release
* PMT purchase: almost final, Jarrod Fitzpatrick back June 25
* FSU contract: response from legal, no response to technical
* in contact with Dmitry recently on CCDB
Elliott
* determining number of rocs
* cleaning up last 12 GeV planning lines
* inventory database: stuff going in
* evaluating hand-held scanner
* C++ EVIO stuff needs to be done
* demo of e-log from Accelerator this week or next
* raw data tape: Graham agrees it should be done
* controls: meeting on instrumentation for BCAL temperature
* solenoid: working on Fastrack schedule
* will need 3 OSP's for magnet test
* UPS will be turned on relatively soon
* Jonathan measuring power quality
* UPS power for the Hall a question
* refurbishment of Danfysik power supply needs to be done
Elton
* Santa Maria shipped 400 tested SiPMs, they are stuck in Memphis
* Bobby has tested all the SiPMs we have here
Simon
* work tracking errors and track recovery, a few problem tracks are
being studied
* working on alignment of FDC using straight line tracking
* improving algorithm for vertices
* putting vertex into kinematic fitter
* looking at dE/dx in start counter for PID, a feasibility study
Beni
* CDC construction about 1 month behind schedule
+ used to be 3 months behind
* FDC testing: coda light does not work with Linux cpus
* Narciso Gomez[?] working on layout for gas system, will allow a
3-gas mix
Hovanes
* need some VME based control units, scalers, will order 4 or 5
* need logic units: considering CAEN 1495
* finishing document on motion control with Vanik
* received two scopes, gave them to Fernando for entry into database
* installation of UPS complete, with remote distribution cabinet
* Giles's power distribution plan: acquiring parts
* will meet with sales person on fancy power strips for racks with
computers
* installation/maintenance/controls help from Accelerator:
programming tasks
Elton, Eugene, Need for Low Current Running
* Hall D beam-line minimum current planned to be 50 nA, below that
run with no diagnostics
* flux normalization discussion ensued
Bert
* radiological materials: if there are issues call Radcon
* if work in the Hall planned, contact Work Coordinator (Tom
Carstens) first
* continue to use OSPs and TOSPs where necessary
* Bert willing to help during transition from Javier to Patricia
* undergraduates in the Halls:
+ must take training
+ when in hall, must be with an escort
+ escort cannot be another student
+ see [37]Larry Cardman's memo for details
* in case of injury or illness, you can always call Medical Services
at 7539, they can provide guidance on appropriate action
* the incident involving the short of the septum in Hall A: notable
event report posted on the EH&S page
* there was an event in Hall B: after flooding noticed crash button
was hit, PSS then let person into Hall contrary to expected system
behavior, incident under investigation
* power supply and solenoid test in Hall D: formal review requested
