Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, March 23, 2015
From GlueXWiki
Present: Fernando Barbosa, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Mark Dalton, Hovanes
Egiyan, Sergey Furletov, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev,
Patrizia Rossi, Elton Smith, Sascha Somov, Justin Stevens, Simon Taylor,
Tim Whitlatch, Beni Zihlmann
Announcements, Eugene
* DOE budget briefing:
o FY16 lean operations budget
o FY17 may get 30 weeks
* Simon is now Staff Scientist II!
* DIRC review
o currently waiting on MIT mirror development results
o Patrizia: status assessment a good reason to hold review
o will schedule something for summer
* conferences
o Mark D. going to CIPANP
o get your plans into Eugene ASAP
Long-Range Plan, Patrizia
* Mon. Tue. next week: preparatory meeting for EIC component
Solenoid, Eugene
* last Wednesday's incident, three possibilities
1. quench or "flux jump"
2. motion of conductor
3. turn-to-turn short
o similar incidents seen before
* plan: stay at 300 A for this week, 800 A may be OK if needed
* remedies
o can reduce ramp rate
o can introduce delay of 200 ms before magnet dumped, avoids
ramping down if voltage excursion quickly self-correcting
+ this incident different from major quench 2 years ago, no
signals on magnetic pick-ups then
* incident on Saturday during ramp down: extremely short voltage
excursion, 2 ms
Temperature in Hall
* Mark D.: regulating with fan speed temperature
o try range from 4 to 6 kRPM
o OK for FCAL, BCAL South, not enough dynamic range for BCAL North
* Fernando: detailed understanding not there yet
o will look at data from power supplies, voltages stable or not?
o back of racks: warmer than ambient, fans might help
o will test single board
o pedestal variation should be on 14 to 16 bit level with this
temperature variation, not the 12-bit that we see
o should try baffles, walls, or something in Hall to further
disperse flow from HVAC unit
+ Tim: will try something, several simple options available
Run Readiness, David
* Optics experts were due at MCC at 1 pm today
Fourinert, Lubomir
* loss still a concern
* Tim: consulted with manufacturer, we fill overflow tank, perhaps
liquid accounting issue?
Shift Takers' Info, Elton
* update target instruction
* Tim will provide simplified solenoid operating instructions
* gluon nodes rebooting
o David: gluon46 replaced with gluon48 for now
* photon beam procedures live mostly in log book
o need to transfer to ops wiki
Survey Data for Spring 2015, Tim
* latest results in from Survey Group
* Lubomir will make a link, like for Fall Run
EIC Consortium Meeting, Fernando
* RPC meeting held
* RICH meeting next
* meetings every other Monday
* RICH-specific meeting every other Friday
